6 best high-street barn jackets for autumn from New Look, H&M, ASOS and more

By staff21 September 2025No Comments6 Mins Read

The barn jacket is the must-have style for autumn 2025, and our fashion writers have hunted down the best ones to wear on repeat

Our top pick for balancing style with affordability is H&M’s £39.99 option(Image: H&M)

Previously reserved for muddy dog walks and countryside living, in recent years the barn jacket has become way more than a practical layering piece. The autumn season has seen the iconic silhouette reimagined across the high street, cementing the style as a must-have for fashion fans.

The barn jacket trend follows on from a rise in heritage workwear, with brands like Carhartt, Dickies and Levi’s all being extremely popular as shoppers look for timeless and durable pieces that will stand the test of time. Unlike trend-led styles, barn jackets are a classic, so whether shoppers opt for an affordable style or invest in a pricier piece, they’re guaranteed to be a coat you can bring out of the wardrobe year after year.

Often boasting cord or waxed bodies with contrast collars and practical pockets, barn jackets are warm enough to fend off early autumn chills, but light enough to layer under heavier coats. They’re structured enough to smarten up casual looks, too, coming in a range of colours, from neutrals to pastels for those who enjoy a pop of colour.

From more traditional styles to modern takes on the silhouette, I’ve scoured the high street for this years’ top picks, and it’s safe to say that there’s a barn jacket to suit every budget. Here are the best barn jackets to buy now and wear for on repeat.

H&M Coated-Collar Twill Jacket – £39.99

H&M’s take on a barn jacket perfectly balances style and affordability. Coming in under £40, it boasts a classic cream colour and comes in nine sizes from XXS to 4XL. The coated collar adds a utility feel to the jacket, while the hidden drawstring allows wearers to cinch the waist for definition.

With its dropped shoulders and roomy fit, it’s the perfect throw-on piece for transitional weather. However, it is described as oversized, which could overwhelm smaller frames unless intentionally styled.

Nobody’s Child Dark Navy Cord Detail Barn Coat – £135

Nobody’s Child’s barn coat has proven to be extremely popular, with the camel version already sold out in every size. For something a little different, I love the navy as it feels a little more elevated, with thoughtful features like an adjustable funnel tab collar that can be worn high or low.

The chocolate cord collar and cuffs add texture to the look and make it perfect for pairing with chocolate leather accessories, such as knee high boots. The only downside is the price – at £135, it’s a considered purchase compared to other high-street options.

New Look Tan Contrast Collar Cropped Barn Jacket – £39.99

For a cropped option – great for elongating the legs – New Look has nailed the casual-but-smart aesthetic with their Tan Contrast Collar Cropped Barn Jacket after almost selling out their stone coloured midi barn coat. Coming in at £39.99, it’s designed with a contrast corduroy collar and large buttoned flap pockets.

So far, it’s earned a 4.9 star-rating from shoppers, one of which said it has ‘such a nice fit and weight’ adding how it ‘looks great with jeans for autumn’.

Another added: “Lovely jacket, very smart. Good fit, slightly blouson shape so useful for when I need to wear a jumper underneath. Great price.”

However, a third suggested that the cuffs are ‘short’, commenting: “Great style and good quality for the price. Nicely lined which was a nice surprise. Only downside is the cuff is quite short when folded back so the cord is visible – but it can be folded down, I can live with that. Overall happy with the jacket and a good boxy fit.”

FatFace Devon Dark Green Heritage Jacket – £120

Described as a ‘do-it-all’ jacket, FatFace’s heritage jacket is as practical as it is stylish. The attention to detail is next-level, having been fully lined with a gingham design, finished with cord trims and a wax feel. Double entry pockets and adjustable cuffs add function to the piece, while the waist channels ensure a perfect fit.

The deep green shade makes it stand out from the sea of tans and navys on the market, but the boxy fit may not appeal to those who prefer a sleeker silhouette.

Monsoon Rosie Barn Jacket Pink – £99

If you’re looking for something even more unique, Monsoon’s pink Rosie Barn Jacket is already a hit with social media influencers. The blush and merlot colour combination is unlike any other we’ve seen online, and is guaranteed to stand out.

Like its neutral counterparts, the jacket has a contrast corduroy collar, zip and button fastenings and supersized pockets – ideal for dog walks. Shoppers have been heaping praise on the coat, writing: “Beautiful colour and over sized look, perfect for autumn.”

Another said: “I love the colour and style of this new jacket and the lovely lining.. Although I sized down it was still very roomy but I decided to keep it as I will be wearing slightly thicker clothes. My only grouse is that the sleeves are a bit too wide but, with the cuff rolled back to reveal the checked lining, they don’t look so bad.”

ASOS DESIGN Oversized Washed Jacket with Leather-Look Collar – £65

Sitting somewhere in the mid-price range, this ASOS DESIGN number channels 80s vibes with shoulder pads for an even more playful silhouette. Priced at £65, the oversized jacket has a faux-leather collar, zip and press-stud fastening and size pockets.

The length makes it a great hip-covering option, and the relaxed cut means it’s perfect for layering over chunky knits. One shopper wrote: “Very comfy but very large. Lovely length that covers the hips.”

Another commented: “Love this jacket – although it really doesn’t need shoulder pads. I removed them easily enough! I’m usually a size 8-10, and bought a size 8 which is still quite oversized.”
