Europe’s ‘best’ Christmas market is one of the ‘oldest’ to visit with hotels from £26

By staff23 September 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Dresden’s Christmas market dates back to 1434 and is the oldest in Germany. The Striezelmarkt has 240 stands, perfect for a winter’s evening browsing

If you’re already daydreaming about the festive season, then Christmas markets are likely on your radar. However, many of the most sought-after markets can be a bit of a blow to your budget.

Many are costly to reach, and some cities hosting the more popular markets have extortionate accommodation prices. But there’s one stunning market that has been around since the Middle Ages and won’t leave you skint.

Dresden’s Christmas market, dating back to 1434, is the oldest in Germany.

The Striezelmarkt boasts 240 stalls, ideal for a winter evening’s perusal. Nestled in the city centre at Altmarkt square, it’s famed for its Stollen (fruit bread) and mulled wine.

This market will kick off on 26 November and continue until 24 December, reports the Express.

You can also pop over to Dresden’s Medieval Christmas market, just a short stroll from Altmarkt Square and hidden within the Royal palace.

This market is one of the only preserved jousting sites in the world. Here, visitors will be captivated by knights, medieval themed stalls and traditional crafts.

All the food is locally sourced, and the entire market is plastic free.

There are more than 40 stallholders who ply their trade using tools and materials from the late medieval period.

The market takes immense pride in its beautifully hand-crafted kitchen utensils, wrought-iron lamps, custom-made leather belts and bags, jewellery, candles, animal skins, felt slippers and more.

One of the major attractions of this market is that Dresden is a very budget-friendly destination.

If you’re planning a trip, you can book a private twin bedroom near the city centre for as little as £26 per person.

To reach there, direct flights depart from London every day.

Alternatively, you can fly to Berlin and take a train further inland to Dresden.
