As the festive season draws nearer, it’s crucial to bear in mind that wellbeing must stay top of the agenda. The Christmas period frequently involves socialising and the unavoidable circulation of bugs – for numerous people, this leads to a persistent cough.

If you’re battling a cough before Christmas has even begun, there’s no need to visit your doctor, according to NHS guidance. Rather, concentrate on getting plenty of rest, staying well-hydrated and maintaining distance from others to avoid additional spread. For those looking for a household remedy, social media might hold the solution. The renowned health and wellness account @healthy. organic.ways, boasting an impressive amount of followers on Instagram, posted a rapid relief method.

The post starts: “This remedy might be just what you need. Today I’ll show you how to prepare a powerful natural solution that will provide relief in just minutes. You’ll need one orange cut off the top and remove the centre or pulp.”

It continues: “Oranges are excellent for soothing coughs as they reduce inflammation and disinfect the bronchial tubes. Once the pulp is removed, place the orange over a flame on your stove and add a pinch of salt.”

If you’re giving this remedy to your little ones, it’s recommended to use just a pinch of salt for youngsters between 2-5 years of age, whilst those above five, half a teaspoon can do wonders.

The video continues: “Also add a pinch of turmeric powder and mix.

“Now heat the mixture until it darkens and starts to boil. Once it boils for a few seconds, it’s ready so let it cool for a minute then add a spoonful of honey then give it to your child in the morning and night for three days.”

The account suggests this “homemade orange-based recipe could be the solution you’ve been searching for”. It highlights that oranges are renowned for their anti-inflammatory and disinfecting properties.

When the fruit is mixed with a smidgen of turmeric and honey, it can also “make a powerful remedy to soothe bronchial irritation”.

It adds: “Not only does this mixture help calm a nagging cough, but it also provides immune-boosting benefits to your little one.”

What does the NHS recommend for a cough?

The NHS recommends the following to tackle a cough:

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen to treat any pain
  • Hot lemon and honey (not suitable for babies under one)
  • A herbal medicine called pelargonium (suitable for people aged 12 or over)

Meanwhile, a pharmacist can assist if you have a cough and advise you on the best syrup, medicine or sweets to take. If you have a persistent cough which hasn’t subsided in weeks, you should visit your local GP for assistance.
