Ryder Cup chaos sees heated Bryson DeChambeau and Tommy Fleetwood clash before caddie’s shove

A Ryder Cup match between the United States and Europe descended into chaos on Saturday as Bryson DeChambeau got into a heated row with Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose

22:49, 27 Sep 2025Updated 22:50, 27 Sep 2025

Bryson DeChambeau became embroiled in a heated row with Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose as a disastrous Saturday deteriorated further for Team USA at the Ryder Cup. DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler, three down, required a birdie at Bethpage Black’s 15th green to keep the match alive, which DeChambeau duly delivered.

However, tensions then erupted with Fleetwood and Rose voicing their annoyance, appearing to claim that DeChambeau’s caddie, Greg Bodine, had obstructed their view. DeChambeau reacted angrily to the Europeans’ complaints, sparking a heated exchange with Fleetwood and Rose.

Fleetwood’s towering caddie, Ian Finnis, seemed to attempt to defuse the situation as the players exchanged harsh words, reports the Mirror US. Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, also became involved, furiously berating the European pair and vice-captain Francesco Molinari, who was even shoved before things calmed down.

Asked about the incident, Rsoe said: “It was a shame the match got to that point. I was waiting to putt, the boys were working on their read, going through their bits and pieces so I waited.

“I felt like they then came up again, and I questioned, ‘It’s my putt right?’ Maybe I didn’t say it as politely in the moment, but there was by no means any disrespect. Obviously it was taken the wrong way (by DeChambeau). I don’t think we should dwell on that. If I should say, ‘Excuse me please’, then my bad.”

Asked for his view, Fleetwood said: “It’s part of it right. It’s one moment out of two days of a lot of great golf. Whatever, it happens, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Another point, every single point is huge. Let’s finish today off and think about tomorrow.”

When asked if Is the incident put to bed, Rose added: “I hope so, I spoke to the boys. It should be. There was no intent behind it whatsoever. Especially with Scottie, I admire him, huge respect all around. From my point of view, it was taken in a way it shouldn’t have been. I think happy days all round.”

Tempers have reached boiling point at Bethpage on Saturday with Europe seizing a commanding position in the contest. Another 3-1 triumph in the morning foursomes session has given Luke Donald’s side an 8.5-3.5 advantage in New York.

There were glimpses of friction between the European golfers and American spectators during the morning session, with Rory McIlroy telling one group to “Shut the f— up.”

At the start of the afternoon fourballs, crowd hostility intensified, with McIlroy and Shane Lowry lodging an official complaint to referee Mike Raby following verbal abuse from spectators, as well as jeering whilst attempting to strike their putts.
