Car brand that’s popular in Europe finally coming to UK with SUV to rival Kia

By staff29 September 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Rival manufacturers may need to brace themselves for a wave of competition from one of the world’s most established and, at the same time, fastest-growing automotive giants

A major motor manufacturer is making a move into the UK market with a new electric SUV that seems set to take on Kia, boasting strong safety specifications and competitive pricing.

Changan is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in China, long established in Europe and selling millions of cars a year worldwide. But despite this success, the firm has so far avoided selling in Great Britain.

But that’s about to change, with the brand introducing a pair of models in the UK. Among them is the new Deepal S05 crossover, positioned as a direct challenger to Kia’s spacious and tech-filled EV3.

As reported by Auto Express, the S05 will be joined by the Deepal S07. It will cost less than £40,000, boasting a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating — on top of that, it has already been adapted more than 150 times to suit our nation’s roads and regulations.

Changan also confirmed plans to establish an extensive sales and service presence in the UK, aiming to set up 60 dealerships across the country. The company wants to roll out its products gradually, focusing only on models and price points matching customer demand.

Nic Thomas, Changan’s UK managing director, said: “We will bring the Changan Deepal S05 to the UK by the end of this year. We will have a range of price points and engines. Changan is a global automotive player with more than 60 vehicles in the pipeline.”

The firm’s expansion extends well beyond the British market. In August, Changan announced its aim of becoming one of the world’s top 10 carmakers, reflecting the ambition seen from other Chinese manufacturers including BYD, Jaecoo, Omoda, Leapmotor, Chery and Denza.

What stands Changan apart is its long history and industrial weight. As China’s oldest car manufacturer, the company has been producing vehicles since 1984 and has extensive experience in the market.

It also has a wide reach, producing motorcycles, parts, and even engaging in logistics and financial services. Partnerships with established names have added further credibility, with Changan working with Ford and Mazda through joint ventures that have helped it refine design, technology and quality.

On the global stage, Changan already operates design studios in Turin and Munich, as well as a dedicated research and development centre on these shores. Changan is betting that its blend of affordability, safety and engineering experience can win over Brit drivers.

Rivals including Kia may need to brace themselves for a wave of competition from one of China’s most established and, at the same time, fastest-growing automotive giants.
