Alan Shearer pinpoints Mo Salah issue in Liverpool loss – ‘Doesn’t look right’

Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season as Crystal Palace ran out 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park, with Alan Shearer claiming that Mohamed Salah is lacking confidence

Alan Shearer has suggested that Liverpool’s star player, Mohamed Salah, is suffering from a lack of confidence as the Reds’ attack ‘doesn’t look right’. Arne Slot’s team experienced their first loss of the season when Eddie Nketiah ruthlessly ended their perfect record with a 2-1 victory for Crystal Palace.

This season, Liverpool have relied on late goals or heroic defending to keep up in the Premier League title race. It seemed like history was about to repeat itself when Federico Chiesa stepped up to score the equaliser.

However, a defensive error led to their second defeat this year at the hands of the South London club, following their Community Shield disappointment.

The champions have had the start they desired, winning five out of their first six matches, but the nature of these performances has sparked discussion.

This is particularly true after the arrival of world-class talent across the field following a summer spending spree. Liverpool broke their transfer record twice to sign Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who also set a British record, while letting go of several of their Premier League title-winners.

Wirtz, in particular, has faced criticism for failing to assist since the Community Shield loss to Palace, and for not contributing a goal in the Premier League.

Salah has also had a slow start to the season following his record-breaking performance last year, but Shearer believes that the Egyptian is lacking confidence.

“They’re still trying to work out Wirtz because they left [Cody] Gakpo out, put Wirtz on the left, Salah on the right and Isak down the middle and it still didn’t look right,” the Newcastle and England legend told the Rest is Football podcast.

“Salah certainly doesn’t look confident and not the Salah were used to yet, it’ll change and it’s a matter of time but they’re all trying to figure out how to get the best out of each other.

“They haven’t played well as yet, they’ve scored all those late goals and again, they get a late goal but it was role reversed.”
