An historic and heritage estate in West Sussex has been named by The Times as one of the best weekend break destinations in the UK, with activities fit for the whole family
With school back in session, making the most of weekends as a family is even more vital. That starts with choosing a destination that is close enough for comfort and promises entertainment for little ones.
Luckily, one of the best family-friendly holiday destinations in the country happens to be just an hour outside of London. The Times recently lauded one historic estate in West Sussex on its list of the 14 best UK destinations for a weekend getaway with the family.
The Times highlighted the Cowdray Estate near Midhurst for its wide-ranging selection of activities – first for visitors of all ages and interests. Activities include foraging, fly fishing, star gazing, clay pigeon shooting and polo, a list that “sounds more like the CV of a 19th-century gentleman” according to the publication.
In fact, the 16,500-acre English estate is steeped in a rich history. The Cowdray Heritage Ruins are one of England’s most important early Tudor houses, known to have been visited by both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.
While a devastating fire destroyed the property centuries ago, the ruins can still be explored during Heritage Events and with guided tours.
Cowdray is also considered the home of British polo, hosting matches like the Gold Cup for the British Open Championships in the summertime. The 18-hole Cowdray golf course is another huge sporting draw—offering impressive views over the South Downs National Park.
Cowdray Estate recently completed the final phase of a £1million investment, unveiling a newly reimagined par-3 course and an enticing selection of stay-and-play packages. The new short course design pairs with greenside bunkers that mirror the style of the main course.
Those seeking to get out and about in nature for their weekend break with the family will have access to plenty of walking trails at Cowdray. There are miles of walking trails to explore, taking visitors past the Cowdray Ruins, Cowdray Forest, Deer Park and the Lawns Polo Grounds.
Visitors will also have plenty of options when it comes to accommodations as well. They can choose from B&B rooms, cottage conversions or the 22-bedroom main house. Cowdray’s holiday cottages are also a great base for those interested in exploring the coast—only half an hour’s drive away.
The cottages are situated right next to the tranquil Benbow Pond, with convenient access to the network of footpaths. The cottages are self-catering but well-equipped for families.
One of the best-loved features of the area has to be the Cowdray Farm Shop Café. Open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, the cafe’s menu includes traditional favourites like a Full English and triple cooked chips.
The chefs use estate produce and other local suppliers for their ingredients where possible, adding a layer of authenticity to the dining experience.
