Pretty European island that pensioners love is 26C in October

By staff2 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Crete is one of the largest and most diverse islands in Greece, offering a mix of ancient history, beautiful beaches, and a warm climate that makes it a popular choice for retirees

Greece is a treasure trove of stunning islands, each with its unique charm. Santorini is renowned for its white buildings perched above the sea, while Corfu boasts lush hills and picturesque views.

Whether you’re after relaxation, adventure, or culture, there’s a Greek island to cater to every traveller. Crete, one of Greece’s largest islands, offers a rich blend of ancient history and vibrant local traditions. It’s home to remnants of the Minoan civilisation, including the famed Palace of Knossos, which dates back millennia.

Alongside these historical sites, the island is a top pick for pensioners. Crete is an ideal spot for older adults, thanks to its year-round warm weather, perfect for escaping the UK’s cold and damp climates.

Even in October, the island enjoys temperatures of 26C, making it an idyllic retreat for holidaymakers looking to escape the UK’s chilly weather.

Life on the island is tranquil and friendly, with hospitable locals and a strong community spirit that makes it easy for retirees to feel at home. Reports suggest that healthcare is both excellent and affordable, with modern hospitals and clinics in towns like Heraklion and Chania.

Living costs are lower than much of the UK, allowing pensioners to stretch their money further. Many retirees also value the availability of direct flights from the UK, making family visits or trips back home relatively straightforward, reports the Express.

Crete boasts an incredible array of experiences, from discovering the ancient ruins of Knossos – linked to the legend of the Minotaur – to trekking through the spectacular Samaria Gorge, a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

The island’s shoreline features breathtaking beaches such as Elafonissi, Balos, and Vai, each boasting its own unique charm. Crete is equally renowned for its mouth-watering cuisine, featuring traditional fare like dakos, lamb with wild greens, and fresh seafood served in charming waterfront tavernas.

Towns including Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, and Agios Nikolaos display a fascinating blend of Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek architecture, contributing to Crete’s remarkable cultural atmosphere.

One holidaymaker shared on TripAdvisor forum: “I just returned from a fabulous one week adventure in Crete. I could never have imagined what a variety of scenery and experiences one island could provide!

“There were dramatic mountain peaks, rugged cliffs, beautifully cultivated vineyards and olive groves, pristine lakes, amazing caves, fascinating Minoan and Roman ruins, gorgeous beaches, and quaint old villages.”

“We stayed in the very small village of Pendamodi about 30 minutes south of Iraklion. It was an excellent base for exploration and we felt as if we were “locals” rather than tourists. After a day in the car, it was wonderful to walk to the delightful nearby taverna for a delicious and inexpensive meal. Our house was charming.”

They added: “Although it has a timeless, traditional look, it was built very recently so everything feels very new, clean and modern inside. There are beautiful gardens, a lovely swimming pool, and spectacular views. All of our travel arrangements were made through Cachet Travel in London (020 8847 8700). One price per person included a charter flight from London, the house and a car. I highly recommend this vacation.”

Another holidaymaker added: “This may be the largest island & seem busy, but there are some Quiet & relaxing places to find, especially west of Chania, Maleme is where I have stayed on several occasions, Alexis Apts are a good base they are very clean & tidy, Alex & George are your host’s they make you feel very welcome & can’t do enough to help you, Kolymbari, Aghia Marina,Paleohora are lovely places to go also Chania is good for food & shopping to get you back to a bit of hussle&bussle, the war graves at Souda bay & Maleme are also worth a visit.”
