‘I’m a cleaning expert and I swear by three natural methods to banish mould’

By staff2 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A cleaning expert has shared that there are chemical-free ways of ridding your home of mould as the weather gets colder, and you may already have everything you need in your pantry

A cleaning expert has shared a simple way to get rid of mould without harsh chemicals. Lynsey Crombie, AKA Lynsey Queen of Clean, has shared three ways you can banish mould and condensation as the weather gets colder. EnviroVent states: “Condensation occurs when warm air collides with cold surfaces, or when there’s too much humidity in your home. When this moisture-packed warm air comes into contact with a chilly surface, it cools down quickly and releases the water, which turns into liquid droplets on the cold surface”.

These liquid droplets can then cause mould, which isn’t what you want in your home. According to the NHS, moulds produce allergens (substances that can cause an allergic reaction). They can also produce irritants and sometimes toxic substances. Inhaling or touching mould spores may cause an allergic reaction like: sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes, skin rash.

Lynsey said: “As the colder months roll in, our homes face new challenges: damp, condensation, stale air, and more time spent indoors with family (and pets!)

“The good news? With a few natural, affordable swaps, you can keep your home clean, cosy, and safe, without harsh chemicals. Here are my tried-and-tested tips to see you through autumn and winter.”

Combat Mould Naturally

Condensation and damp are common as the heating goes on, but you don’t need heavy chemicals to fight mould.

  • White vinegar: Spray directly onto affected areas, leave for an hour, then wipe clean.
  • Bicarb paste: Mix with water into a thick paste for stubborn patches on grout or tiles.
  • Ventilation: Open windows daily, even for just 10 minutes to keep air circulating.

These non-toxic fixes are safe for kids and pets while still tackling those tricky winter spots.

DIY Winter Fresheners

Colder weather can leave homes feeling a little stuffy. I love simple, natural ways to freshen the air:

  • Simmer pots: Orange peels, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in water create a cosy festive scent.
  • Citrus vinegar sprays: Double up as a cleaner and deodoriser.
  • Herb sachets: Dried rosemary, lavender, or thyme tucked into drawers and cupboards keep things smelling fresh.

Sustainable Cleaning Swaps

It’s easy to make eco-friendly choices with your cleaning kit. Try:

  • Reusable cloths and brushes instead of disposable wipes.
  • Plant-based detergents for everyday surfaces.
  • Refillable spray bottles to cut down on single-use plastics.

These swaps are better for the planet and often save money long term.

Keep Kids and Pets Safe

With everyone spending more time indoors, safe cleaning is a must.

  • Stick to natural staples like vinegar, lemon, citric acid, vodka, and bicarb.
  • Avoid bleach-based products where curious hands or paws might reach.
  • Use soft-bristle brushes to lift dirt gently without damaging surfaces.

Quick Autumn & Winter Cleaning Wins

When life’s busy, little and often works wonders:

  • Wipe down skirting boards and door handles to stay on top of winter grime.
  • Sprinkle carpets with bicarbonate of soda before vacuuming to freshen them up (do this occasionally, not daily).
  • Run soda crystals through washing machines and dishwashers to keep appliances working efficiently.

Final Thought

Autumn and winter should be about feeling cosy, not overwhelmed by housework. With natural products, quick wins, and eco-friendly swaps, your home can stay sparkling clean, safe, and ready for the season ahead.
