NHS Covid vaccine side effects including ‘rare’ heart symptom and when to call 999

By staff3 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

While generally considered safe, the Covid vaccine has a wide range of side effects

People who receive the Covid-19 vaccine this winter may experience some side effects, including serious ones that may require attention at A&E. Vaccines are offered to help protect the body against viruses and are especially recommended during the winter period.

This is because viruses such as Covid-19 change over time, which means the immune system’s protection weakens. While not everyone is required to take the vaccine, it is generally recommended for those who are at a higher risk of developing a severe illness from a coronavirus infection.

Generally, the NHS advises you to receive the Covid-19 vaccine if you are aged 75 or over, live in a care home for older people, or have a weakened immune system due to a health condition or treatment. Despite this, some side effects and risks are associated with the vaccine; overall, it is generally considered safe.

Side effects of Covid-19 vaccine

Not everyone who receives a COVID-19 vaccine will suffer any side effects. However, NHS guidance has highlighted that there are some common side effects, including:

  • Feeling achy
  • A headache
  • Feeling tired
  • A sore arm from the injection
  • Mild flu-like symptoms

Generally, these side effects are mild and should improve within a week. The NHS advises anyone suffering from these side effects to take paracetamol to help them feel better while recovering.

However, there are a number of serious side effects which can affect a very small number of people. For example, some people may experience a severe allergic reaction from the vaccine.

In this case, the person who provided the injection should be trained to deal with allergic reactions and can provide treatment immediately. The NHS has also noted that there have been ‘rare’ cases of heart inflammation (myocarditis) from the vaccine.

Symptoms of myocarditis can include:

  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling in feet, legs, and ankles
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Shortness of breath
  • Light-headedness or dizziness

While symptoms from myocarditis can be discomforting, the NHS notes that most people who had it recovered following rest and simple treatments. In some cases, you may experience more serious symptoms, either immediately or a few days after being vaccinated, in which case it is advised to call 999 or go to A&E.

These serious symptoms can include:

  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Heart palpitations, fast beating, or fluttering
  • Chest pain or a tight feeling in the chest
