‘That’s ridiculous’ – Jamie Carragher offers reaction to Chelsea celebrations after Enzo Maresca sent off

By staff6 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Enzo Maresca was sent off after the wild celebrations following Estevao’s winning goal in their 2-1 win over Liverpool and Jamie Carragher has criticised the rule restricting him from performing media duties

Jamie Carragher has admitted that he loved the celebration of Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca against Liverpool. The former England defender slammed the rule that restricted the Italian from speaking to the media after their dramatic 2-1 win.

Estevao ghosted in at the back post to snatch three points for the Blues after Cody Gakpo cancelled out Moises Caicedo’s outstanding opener. The strike inflicted a third straight defeat, in all competitions, for the Premier League champions as they missed out on the opportunity to return to the top of the league.

After the Brazilian’s goal, Maresca ran down the touchline to join in with the celebrations and jumped on his players after all-but-securing a confidence-boosting win.

However, the former Leicester City boss was sent off by Anthony Taylor after picking up a yellow earlier in proceedings.

The decision meant that Maresca was unable to perform post-match media duties, leading to criticism from Carragher.

“From Chelsea’s point of view, it’s a fantastic result for them, the biggest under Enzo Maresca in his tenure, certainly at Stamford Bridge,” he said.

“In terms of a togetherness with the club, it’s a brilliant result for them. That was a victory that does a lot for the club in terms of the manager.

“I loved the manager’s celebration, I loved him running down the line, I can’t believe he can’t come out and speak to us, that’s ridiculous, you want to hear from him.

“For me, his biggest result, that will build a connection with the supporters, I said a lot last year, I think he’s a really good coach, every time they come up against Liverpool they had a plan.

“At times there wasn’t that connection with the supporters and that was maybe waning in the last couple of weeks because of what happened in the summer was fantastic but some poor results, celebrating like that, a win like that against the champions builds a real bond.”

The Football Association’s touchline behaviour charter, which was implemented in 2023, means any manager or head coach who is sent off is then unable to perform their usual media duties after the match.

Maresca’s assistant Willy Caballero took on the responsibility in his absence. “It’s something special for any manager, no manager can hold inside what they feel,” he said.

“Unfortunately for him he was already on a yellow.”

“We are all human beings. We have been players, we love to see that. For sure all of us we can learn from that as well.”
