‘Secret weapon’ will keep your home damp free all winter says expert

By staff7 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Condensation is something you don’t want to see in your house, especially as the weather gets colder. Lynsey Queen of Clean has shared how you can banish it before it becomes a bigger problem

As the weather gets colder, condensation often starts to build up in our homes. Once it’s there, it can be hard to get rid of. That’s why Lynsey Crombie, AKA Lynsey Queen of Clean, has shared some simple ways you can keep your home as condensation-free as possible, including a “secret weapon” that will help immensely.

Lynsey said: “As the chill of autumn and winter sets in, many of us notice our homes battling an unwelcome guest: condensation. Left untreated, it can quickly lead to damp patches and mould, not only unsightly but also damaging to your health and home.

“With a few simple tweaks to your daily routine, you can keep moisture under control and protect your space from the dreaded damp”.

Start the Day Right – Clear the Windows

Overnight, condensation naturally gathers on internal window panes.

Make it part of your morning routine to wipe them down and remove excess moisture. For extra protection, consider applying an anti-condensation spray or even a simple DIY solution that leaves a barrier to help prevent build-up throughout the day.

Ventilate Wisely

It may sound unpleasant when the temperature drops, but a quick burst of fresh air can make all the difference.

Open your windows for just a few minutes daily, especially in kitchens and bathrooms where moisture levels are highest.

If you have extractor fans or trickle vents, use them; they’ll help circulate air without letting too much heat escape.

According to one window expert, the so-called “Stoffluften” trick from Germany can clear the damp from homes in minutes and minimise the chance of a damp and mouldy home.

Matan Korin, the Vice President of Sales at Ecoline Windows, says Stoffluften, translating as “shock ventilation,” sees several windows being opened in a house for no more than three minutes.

He said: “This will create a draft, swapping most of the warm, humid air inside the house with cold air from outside. As the fresh air’s temperature rises, it takes up the extra humidity in the house.”

Dehumidifiers – Your Secret Weapon

When it comes to keeping moisture at bay, dehumidifiers are invaluable. Place them in damp-prone areas like bathrooms, bedrooms, or even near your laundry if drying clothes indoors. Don’t forget to empty the water tank regularly to keep it working efficiently.

Tackle Mould Head-On

If mould does appear, act fast. Household staples like white vinegar work well, or you can use a dedicated mould remover spray.

Lightly mist the affected area, leave it to work, then wipe away. For stubborn or recurring patches, a maintenance spray will help stop spores from coming back.

Simple Daily Habits That Make a Big Difference

  • Wipe down bathroom walls and shower screens after use
  • Keep furniture slightly away from walls to allow airflow
  • Wash towels and bath mats frequently to prevent musty odours
  • Always pop lids on pans when boiling water and ventilate straight away

With just a few small steps, you can beat the damp season and enjoy a fresher, healthier home all winter long.

ITV This Morning’s Lynsey Crombie is the UK’s No. 1 home expert and TV presenter. Lynsey’s best-selling book ‘The 15 Minute Clean’ is available to buy from Amazon.
