Shoppers told return Harry Potter items to popular shop over ‘heavy metals’ risk

By staff9 October 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

Anyone affected by this recall can return their items to the store for a full refund or replacement

TK Maxx is urgently recalling specific batches of popular items, citing concerns that they ‘do not meet safety standards’. Customers should now verify whether their purchases are impacted by this recall and stop using them immediately.

The product warning specifically concerns certain sets of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Harry Potter, Sponge Bob and South Park Mugs’ sold by the retailer. It’s believed these items present a health risk as their ‘coating may release levels of heavy metals that exceed safe limits’.

An alert posted by the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) explains: “The products present a health risk because they do not meet safety standards for materials intended to come into contact with food.

“Testing has shown that the coating may release levels of heavy metals that exceed safe limits, which could pose a potential health risk if used with food or beverages.

“The products do not meet the requirements of the Materials and Articles in Contact with Food (England) Regulations 2012 or the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.”

Crucially, the product recall only concerns mugs with six key product codes. According to OPSS, this includes the following:

  • 007840
  • 013167
  • 013171
  • 013203
  • 013208
  • 596096

Customers can locate these codes either on the price tags of their items or on their receipts. Those affected by the recall can subsequently return these items to a store for a full refund or replacement.

A message on TKK Maxx’s website reiterates: “If you have purchased this product, please stop using it immediately and return to any TK Maxx or Homesense store.”
