Castle Douglas, once known as the ‘food capital’ of Scotland, was visited by a curious Englishman who spent time there before boarding a ferry to Belfast

A well-known YouTuber has unveiled the “shocking reality” of life in a remote Scottish town.

Danny, who runs the Honest Places channel, recently discovered the Dumfries and Galloway town of Castle Douglas. Explaining his visit, he said: “We are going to Belfast but we need to get near, we are getting the ferry tomorrow.

“So we thought we would go to a random town in Scotland near the ferry and see what’s kicking off basically, see what the craic is.”

Castle Douglas, once dubbed Scotland’s “food capital”, was featured in the Daily Record Town of the Week earlier this year where they spotlighted the “perfect” fish and chip shop and cosy pubs.

And it was the pubs that drew Danny upon his arrival. Venturing into Sulwath Brewery, he described it as a “proper locals boozer” before lauding the “warm welcome” he received from the chaps inside.

One bloke, who mistakenly believed his striped green and white top was for Celtic, described his town as a “good spot” with “decent pubs” and he had “no complaints”.

After uploading the video on YouTube, which you can view in full here, one viewer commented: “The locals in this town seemed really nice.”

Another chimed in: “The guy who asked you if your shirt was a mad Celtic top was class.”

A third added: “The side characters in this episode were tremendous.”

Danny’s next destination was Monty’s Sports Bar.

Arriving at the entrance, he remarked: “That’s a beautiful pub. Look at this. Christ, this looks good. I’m going to get a pint of Tennent’s whilst in Scotland, do you know what I mean.”

Following further encounters with residents, he subsequently observed: “Tell you what, everyone is sound in there.”

While strolling to another establishment, Danny paused outside Galbraith estate agents, where he was stunned by property prices.

He informed his 99,600 followers “look at how cheap you can get a house here in Scotland” before expressing amazement at a three-bedroom cottage priced at merely £230,000.

He continued: “Look at this one, £230,000. Look at that. That is ridiculous that. £230,000. That is mad. But you know, if you want to move up here and get a gaff like that, you need to be working from home don’t you.

“It is mad though isn’t it, if you can get a job where you are working from home, you are laughing because you can get that.”

His final destination was Legion Scotland’s branch club where he savoured what he described as the finest pint of Guinness he had consumed that day.

Throughout his evening in Castle Douglas, Danny also observed the absence of young people socialising.

He commented: “How many 18-year-olds have you seen in these pubs? It is half seven on a Friday. When you are in an isolated Scottish town you’ve got to move on haven’t you.”

Following the release of his video, titled ‘the SHOCKING reality of SCOTTISH remote towns’, one viewer responded: “Scottish scenery just makes everything seem better.”

One fan reminisced: “I stayed in Castle Douglas several times for work 4 years ago, stayed in the Imperial Arms once as well. Genuinely one of the weirdest places I’ve ever been to – and this video only reaffirms that. Great memories.”
