5 stunning autumn walks with amazing colours and a cosy pub at the end

By staff12 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

From picturesque views of The Lake District to a Cotswolds hidden gem, The Mirror has selected a handful of the best walks with a pub finish to tempt you outdoors

Autumn can be one of the most beautiful times of year to go for a stroll, with trees turning red, orange and gold and falling leaves crunching underfoot.

Here in the UK, we’re spoiled for choice for stunning spots to enjoy a hike and many of us have the same end destination in mind – an inviting pub. From a friendly welcome to a crackling real fire and delicious food, taverns can be the ideal place to finish a hearty ramble.

As sweater weather takes over, here’s The Mirror’s list of five wonderful walks that end at a pub, from the Scottish capital city to a forest in Cheshire.

Windsor Great Park

Start your walk at Windsor Castle, where you’ll go through the gates to enter the Long Walk. Follow the two mile tree-lined avenue through the Great Park to the Copper Horse, the popular name for a statue of King George III.

Here, you need to turn left to head towards Englefield Green. This is where you’ll find a true hidden gem – The Fox and Hounds country pub, where dogs and horses are welcomed all year round.

Chipping Campden to Broadway, Cotswolds

Your hike along the Cotswold Way starts in the beautiful, historic market town of Chipping Campden, which is noted for its terraced high street.

Walk through woodland, fields and meadows to reach Broadway Tower, an 18th century folly. You’ll then descend into Broadway itself, a large village referred to the as the Jewel of the Cotswolds. The Horse and Hounds awaits, a traditional cosy pub made out of beautiful Cotswold stone.

Delamere Forest, Cheshire

The county’s largest woodland boasts plenty of options for stunning walks, with dry sandstone paths and lots of mature trees in this shady oasis.

Choose a trail and aim to finish at The Goshawk at Mouldsworth or The Farmer’s Arms in Kelsall – both are country pubs on the fringes of the forest with great reputations.

Loughrigg Fell Walk, The Lake District

This family friendly hike offers panoramic views of Ambleside, Windermere and Rydal Water. Start at Rothay Park, crossing Rothay Bridge and following the path that gently winds up to the summit.

Back in the village, head for the traditional, family friendly Flying Fleece pub, one of eight fabulous pubs to choose from in the popular tourist town.

Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh

An extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat offers panoramic views of the Scottish capital city and the surrounding areas. Start from Holyrood Palace and cross Queens Drive into Holyrood Park.

Here you’ll follow a gravel path before climbing a steady gravel slope which gradually steepens towards the top. After your efforts, there are plenty of pubs to head to, including the iconic Cafe Royal which is known for its stunning Victorian architecture.
