‘Children dying is a horror. It’s quite painful to hear it,’ a local resident said after a 43-year-old woman was arrested in Stafford on suspicion of murder on Saturday morning

“Nothing could be done to save” the two children found dead at a house in Staffordshire this morning, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

A 43-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder after officers attended a property on Corporation Street in Stafford. Staffordshire Police were alerted at around 7.30am on Saturday following reports from the emergency services of the children’s deaths.

Two ambulances and two paramedics were sent to the house at around 7.25am. A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: “On arrival of ambulance staff we discovered two patients, both children. Sadly, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save them and they were confirmed dead at the scene.”

The suspect remains in custody, police said. The force added that the children’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Luke Browne, a 61-year-old bookshop owner who lives on the street, said he saw a forensic van and a police car parked outside as he left for work in the morning. As of Sunday afternoon, part of the road remained cordoned off, StokeonTrentLive reports.

“It’s very sad. Children dying is a horror. It’s quite painful to hear it,” Browne told the outlet. “I’ve only lived there a year but everybody I’ve met has been lovely.”

Detective Inspector Kirsty Oldfield said: “We are working hard to understand more about what happened leading up to these two children tragically losing their lives. We ask that people do not speculate at this stage as it is distressing for family and friends and could hinder our enquiries.

“We understand that this incident may cause concern in the local community. We understand that this incident may cause concern in the local community. There is no threat to the wider public. A cordon is currently in place at a home on Corporation Street.”

Staffordshire Police said in a statement: “A woman has been arrested following the death of two children in Stafford.

“We were called to a home on Corporation Street at around 7.30am today (Sunday 12 October) by colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service.

“Sadly, two children were pronounced dead at the scene. Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers at this tragic time. A 43-year-old woman, from the Stafford area, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.”

Witnesses are asked to call 101 and quote incident 147 of October 12.
