Hotel worker tells holidaymakers to ‘turn off the lights’ when they enter rooms

By staff13 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

A hotel worker has issued a warning to travellers, urging them to take a specific action when they enter their hotel room to avoid a potential infestation

A hotel worker has revealed a crucial tip that could prevent your holiday from being ruined by hidden pests.

While it may appear strange, switching off the lights for a brief moment can spare you from discovering a revolting surprise later on. Halee, known on TikTok as @haleewithaflair, noted that bed bugs can seriously ruin a guest’s experience and revealed a straightforward technique to spot them.

To start your examination, she recommends switching off all lights and drawing the curtains, which might not be your first thought when you’re thrilled about your accommodation.

In a video, she told the tale of a couple who awoke covered in bites following their hotel visit, which prompted her to reveal her method for avoiding a similar ordeal. Halee said: “This is how I check my room before I unpack.”

She recommended making the room as dark as possible and using your phone’s torch to assist with the hunt. Whilst demonstrating, she stressed the significance of examining the folds and edges of the bed, as that’s where bed bugs typically lurk.

She also recommended lifting the mattress and looking beneath, as well as searching for any strange marks, such as blood stains, which can signal the presence of bugs.

To stop bed bugs from catching a lift in your suitcase, she suggested not putting bags on the bed, but instead on a luggage stand or by the entrance.

Furthermore, experts recommend washing all clothes straight away upon returning home to eliminate any potential hitchhikers. Halee also pointed out that guests should check ironing boards and curtains for these annoying critters.

Bedbug bites can appear as red, itchy marks often arranged in a line or cluster. Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the bites, reports the Express. The bugs themselves can be dark yellow, red or brown and are typically only about 5mm long, while their eggs are usually white.

So, next time you enter your hotel room, you might want to take this hotel tip to ensure that your travels are as smooth as one hopes – and bug-free, of course.

“It doesn’t take a lot of effort, but just a few extra minutes from your time. Trust me, it will be worth it.
