5 houseplants that ‘remove toxins’ leaving homes ‘fresher and cleaner’

By staff15 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Indoor plants, including peace lilies, can help to purify the air and remove toxins, making your home feel fresher and cleaner.

Indoor plants, such as peace lilies, can deliver numerous advantages to your home, from enhancing a room’s appearance to eliminating harmful pollutants.

Blooms and houseplants can help create fresher indoor air through various methods, as explained by Eflorist.

They explained: “First, they can help with absorbing toxins, as some flowers, like houseplants, have the ability to absorb pollutants such as formaldehyde and ammonia, which are commonly found in household products.

“They can also help to increase humidity, as flowers release moisture into the air, which can help combat dryness. As well as this, they release oxygen through photosynthesis, since flowers take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen, improving the freshness of your indoor environment.”

Additionally, they offer natural scenting properties, meaning rather than relying on synthetic fragrances and commercial air fresheners, you can use fresh blooms as an organic method to maintain pleasant aromas throughout your property, reports the Express.

The specialists have compiled a selection of five top flowers and plants to incorporate into your living space for “cleaner” and “fresher” air.

1. Peace lilies

Peace lilies rank amongst the most powerful air-cleaning blooms or indoor plants, recognised for eliminating hazardous substances including formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide. The experts said: “So much so that research from NASA identifies them as one of the best air-purifying houseplants. They also thrive in low-light conditions, making them easy to care for, so even beginner gardeners and flower enthusiasts can enjoy the benefits of peace lilies.”

2. Orchids

Orchids are a brilliant choice for boosting air quality, as they can soak up dangerous chemicals like xylene, toluene, and formaldehyde that can be present in the atmosphere.

They also produce oxygen during the night, making them an ideal option for bedrooms.

They’re low maintenance as they only need watering every seven to 10 days.

3. Lavender

The experts added: “Famous for its calming scent, lavender can help reduce stress while also improving air quality, making it another of the best air-purifying plants.

“Lavender can help to filter air pollutants, and it releases a lovely, calming fragrance naturally, eliminating the need for any synthetic air fresheners in your home.”

4. Jasmine

Jasmine blooms produce a sweet aroma and can “improve sleep quality” and “reduce stress” by promoting relaxation, according to the experts.

They added that jasmine flowers are also excellent oxygen-producing blooms whilst absorbing formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene and xylene.
