A man named Phil, who is known online for reviewing UK towns and attractions, has shared his honest thoughts after spending the night in one of the weirdest hotels in the UK
A man has shared his honest verdict after staying a night in what he argued was one of the weirdest accommodations available while on a visit to Oxford.
Sometimes, it can be really nice to get away from your home, even just for one night, and stay the night in a hotel. While there are several budget-friendly hotels available across the UK, sometimes it can be fun to experience something new and unique. This was what a man named Phil wanted to do as he documented his stay in one of Britain’s most unique hotel experiences. Once a Victorian public toilet, The Netty is a unique boutique stay located in central Oxford which offers guests a one-of-a-kind experience.
After the toilet had been closed for 17 years, The Netty on St Giles’ was once a gentlemen’s toilet built in 1885, before being forced to close in 2008 due to safety concerns.
The old toilets sat abandoned for years before owners of the Galaxie Hotel, its partner hotel, were given planning permission for the project in 2019. The two suites have now opened for guests to stay in, and Phil was quick to document his stay for his one million TikTok followers.
“You can spend money and spend the night in a public toilet,” he started, before clarifying that it had in fact been converted into luxury hotel rooms.
Phil revealed he had spent £130 for the night that he had booked the room, which was located in the middle of a busy street. In order to get there, he said he crossed a one way road onto a traffic island, where he arrived at a road sign on the ground which lead him down to some old toilets. Or so it seemed.
“You go into the one you’ve been allocated and see that it is amazing,” Phil revealed, as she showed clips of the fully renovated hotel room. “The quality is brilliant, this isn’t just a cash grab. Proper thought, design, and, most importantly, ventilation has gone into this.”
“This is the weirdest placed I’ve stayed,” he said, claiming it wasn’t even because of the fact that it used to be a public toilet hundreds of years ago.
Phil went on to share his astonishment about the fact the room was located under a traffic island in central Oxford, where cars are constantly ‘whizzing about’ above you as you sleep.
“It’s like you’re a weird side character in a Roald Dahl book,” he said, before starting to question whether he was staying in the old men’s or women’s bathroom.
Being happy with what he’d seen in the room, which all included a comfy king sized bed, a modern en-suite bathroom, and fully stocked mini fridge, Phil walked back up the stairs to the street level to go explore the current public bathrooms, which were nestled under a graveyard.
After enjoying his day out in Oxford, he headed back to his room at night time, which he found was now surrounded by young people, which he had to walk past in order to get down the stairs to the hotel room door.
“Motorbikes and heavy vehicles are the main enemy of your sleep through the night, but overall, it went well. I quite enjoyed my stay,” Phil shared as he woke up the next day
People soon took to the comment section to share their thoughts, and to ask about the room in question, such as what the things in the mini bar cost. To this, Phil replied: “Included… it even had a couple of little cocktails in there.”
“Does it still smell like a public toilet? I feel like you’d never be able to get rid of the smell,” another person asked. Phil went on to say: “No you don’t smell anything! You do forget where you are once you’re in bed.”
