Senne Lammens’ ‘ban’ for Man Utd stars comes to light ahead of crunch Liverpool clash

By staff19 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Senne Lammens has been at Manchester United for just a few weeks, but the new goalkeeper’s superstitions are already well known – with the Belgian issuing a ‘ban’ to his family before every game.

Manchester United’s new goalkeeper Senne Lammens has a bizarre superstition which sees him refuse to discuss clean sheets before matches. The Belgian stopper believes any mention of shutting out the opposition will jinx his performance.

The Daily Mail has shared insights from the youngster’s family and former coaches about his pre-match rituals. United brought Lammens in from Royal Antwerp during the summer transfer window, choosing him ahead of a potential move for Aston Villa’s number one Emi Martinez.

Red Devils’ supporters got their first glimpse of the composed presence Lammens brings to their goal during the Sunderland fixture, with former United centre-backs Rio Ferdinand and Phil Jones both singing his praises – with a clean sheet kept in that debut win.

It was a pleasing moment and return for Ruben Amorim and his new goalkeeper, even if no-one would have dared mention that possibility beforehand – and the same silence will apply ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool.

“According to him, that brings bad luck,” his older brother Tom, who plays up front in Belgium’s third division, told The Daily Mail. I don’t send anything to Senne before the match about clean sheets.”

United have been impressed by Lammens in-house since his arrival from Antwerp earlier this summer. He comes in on his days off for extra sessions and, also, takes detailed notes after games and training.

Brian Vandenbussche, his former goalkeeper coach with Antwerp, also revealed details of the Belgian’s matchday superstitions. “I didn’t like it either… You jinx it,” he said. “I know it’s superstition, but don’t do it. Senne has things he does in a specific order before his warm-up.

“He always wanted me to stand ready before he went out. He did a fist bump with the other two goalkeepers and with me, that was important to him.

“Also, before the game, he went back to the bench because he needed me to give the drink bottles to him. He did it for me to give him the last couple of words of advice.”
