Sheffield Wednesday have NO goalkeepers available for next match as Owls’ crisis deepens

By staff20 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Sheffield Wednesday saw goalkeeper Ethan Horvath sent off at the weekend – that coupled with injury issues means they are without a shot-stopper with an emergency loan eyed

Sheffield Wednesday have been hit with another crisis as manager Henrik Pedersen finds himself without any fit senior goalkeepers for their next match.

No.1 Ethan Horvath was sent off late on in a 2-1 defeat at Charlton on Saturday. He collided with Isaac Olaofe and was given his marching orders – leaving defender Liam Palmer to finish the match in between the sticks.

Horvath’s three-match suspension comes at a time when first-choice Pierce Charles is absent through injury. It means the club would have to turn to an U18 player, yet to play a senior game, or the more likely option is to seek an emergency loan deal. Bristol City’s Joe Lumley is a possible arrival – but any switch would need to be ratified by the EFL due to registration embargo.

Wednesday sit bottom of the Championship – without a win in four matches as their off-field problems continue to manifest themselves on the pitch. They’ve won just once in the league amid huge unrest and financial turmoil.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri has failed to pay players and staff on time in five out of the last seven months and the Championship outfit are reportedly set to be served a winding-up petition over debts of £1million to HMRC.

Chansiri could be left with no choice but to put the Yorkshire outfit into administration if the winding-up petition is issued and he remains unable to pay the tax bill, as was reported last week. A points deduction would then be on the cards for Wednesday, who are already facing an uphill battle to remain in the second tier.

Such action could force the club’s sole director into a sale with fans continuing to protest in an effort to force his hands. There was a boycott for the home EFL Cup ties with Leeds and Grimsby. The supporters’ trust has also encouraged fans not to purchase drinks or food at Hillsborough and to snub Wednesday night’s Championship clash against Middlesbrough.

Sheffield Wednesday’s revenues do not meet their outgoing commitments – despite a summer of upheaval and cost-cutting. The club saw their highly-rated manager Danny Rohl resign from his post. The German has since been linked with the Rangers job.

Wednesday’s clash with Coventry was halted after a handful of fans invaded the pitch to protest the club’s ownership. Chansiri had indicated he was prepared to sell the club, but no agreement has been found for any potential new owners to come in.
