Harry Maguire’s Man Utd redemption at Anfield sends clear message to Thomas Tuchel

By staff20 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Maguire’s winning goal to sink Liverpool at Anfield could have huge implications for himself, Ruben Amorim and Arne Slot in the long run

Jeremy joined the Daily Star in 2010 as Manchester football correspondent and for more than a decade has served as our Chief Sports Writer. He provides expert coverage on Manchester United and Manchester City, the Premier League as a whole, and the England football team. Jeremy has covered football, rugby and cricket World Cups, as well as Wimbledon, the golf majors and the Olympics.

The man known as ‘Slab Head’ came down on Liverpool like a ton of concrete, leaving his most bitter rivals crushed. In this game last season, Harry Maguire missed the chance to win it for Manchester United with the last kick of the match.

But not this time. Only it was his head, one Jamie Vardy came up with the nickname for, which scored the winner. Leaving Liverpool’s own heads spinning. It felt like some personal redemption for Maguire. One of his greatest moments in a United shirt.

Not to mention providing a timely reminder to Thomas Tuchel that he can still have a role to play in next summer’s World Cup.

Since Tuchel took charge of England, Maguire has had his nose put out of joint. He hasn’t made a single appearance under the German.

His last cap came in a 2-0 win in Ireland 13 months ago, when Lee Carsley was caretaker manager. But Maguire still has time to get himself back into Tuchel’s plans. And if he had a point to make to Tuchel, he certainly made it an Anfield.

Maguire was a colossus for United at the back, repelling whatever Liverpool threw at him. It was proof Maguire can still produce what is required at the highest level. One goal from Maguire could have huge ramifications.

For Arne Slot and Liverpool’s title defence. For Ruben Amorim and his future at United. And for Maguire himself.

Someone who has offers from Saudi Arabia on the table, but is hoping United trigger a 12 month extension in his current contract before the season is out.

Maguire might have had some tough times during his club career at United. But he has rarely let England down. And Tuchel will need some experience in his defence if England are to have a genuine tilt at winning the World Cup next summer.

It remains to be seen if Maguire is still the defensive solution for the Three Lions. But he’s certainly given Tuchel something to think about.
