Man Utd news: Paul Scholes raves about £80m signing as target already said ‘yes’ to move

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has made headlines after heaping praise on one of the club’s most loyal servants, while a potential 2026 signing has already “said yes” to a switch

A historic win at Anfield has caused shockwaves throughout the Manchester United community this week. And Harry Maguire continues to rake in the plaudits after Paul Scholes lavished praise on the defender for his match-winning moment.

However, the 84th-minute decider on Merseyside wasn’t the only aspect of Maguire’s play that impressed the United icon. Not only that, but fellow Red Devils great Steve Bruce was in agreement about the £80million man’s contribution.

Elsewhere, United could be onto a winning transfer next summer, who has already given the thumbs up on the move. Mirror Football discusses all the latest rumblings around Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim’s men enjoy their moment in the sun.

Paul Scholes lauds ‘brilliant’ Utd star

Despite his past struggles at United, Maguire has emerged on the other side a hero following his late winner against Liverpool. And Scholes was one of the first to aim praise at the England international following Sunday’s result.

Appearing on the latest episode of ‘The Good, The Bad and the Football’, Scholes told former team-mates Nicky Butt and Steve Bruce: “I was just going to say. I was just going to say that in both boxes, he’s brilliant.

“He heads everything away and he always looks like he’s going to grab you a goal, which ‘Brucey’ will tell you as a centre-half.”

Former United star Bruce concurred with Scholes’ assessment and dubbed Maguire “very, very good.” It was Bruce who brought the then-Sheffield United prospect to Hull City in the summer of 2014 for just £2.5m, though he would go on to move for more than 30 times that fee five years later.

Former Red Devils skipper Maguire has been subject to extensive criticism at United, with many feeling in the past he had failed to justify his £80m price-tag. However, a tide-turning display at Anfield has reminded fans and pundits alike as to just how effective the player can still be on his day.

Potential free transfer already ‘said yes’

Reports have emerged suggesting Barcelona will consider allowing Robert Lewandowski to leave for free next summer when his contract expires. The Catalan club has the option of extending the striker’s deal for 12 months should they wish, but it’s suggested the 37-year-old could be released due to concerns over his age.

That could be great news if United see value in his signing, almost 15 years after they first made a move. And Lewandowski could be open to the idea of a switch to Old Trafford after previously liking the idea when Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to recruit him in 2012. “To Manchester United I decided and said yes,” he told BBC Sport. “I wanted to join Manchester United to see Alex Ferguson.”

Lewandowski had just enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Borussia Dortmund when United came looking for his signature. However, it wasn’t meant to be as the Black and Yellows kept hold of their star before he eventually joined Bayern Munich.

“They [Dortmund] could not sell me,” he added. “Because they knew if I stayed they could earn more money, and that I could wait maybe one or two more years. But it is true that I said yes to Manchester United.”

Despite his advanced years, a short-term deal for Lewandowski could be of huge value to young striker Benjamin Sesko. And it plays into the Red Devils’ hands that the Pole, who will be free to discuss a move in January, has already taken to the idea of joining United in the past.
