Newborn baby abandoned on train station steps with umbilical cord still attached

By staff22 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The baby girl, who was still attached to her umbilical cord, was found abandoned on the steps of a busy train station during Monday morning’s rush hour, police said

A newborn baby girl – still attached to her umbilical cord – was found abandoned on the steps of a busy train station during Monday mornin’’s rush hour.

According to police, the infant was discovered around 9:30 a.m. at the base of the subway stairs leading to the southbound 1, 2, and 3 trains at the 34th Street–Penn Station stop in New York City.

The individual who found the baby quickly called 911, prompting a swift response from emergency personnel.

The baby was conscious and alert when emergency services arrived and transported her to Bellevue Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition, authorities said.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the area in an effort to identify the person who left the child. No arrests had been made as of Monday afternoon.

New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow commented on the incident, saying, “I’m calling it the ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ – just a little earlier than usual. An infant was reported anonymously at the 34th Street station. When FDNY and the NYPD arrived, they found a baby left unattended.”

It comes after police launched an investigation after a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a cardboard box at the side of a road. The discovery was made around 6:50am on Wednesday, September 24, by a passer-by.

The infant, who appeared to be just hours old, was taken to hospital. Doctors confirmed she was in good health, according to the Associated Press. The baby was believed to be less than a day old, as her umbilical cord had already been cut.

The baby was found in Tuguegarao City in the Philippines, according to a statement posted on Facebook by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

May Asuncion, a social worker from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, stated that the baby is stable but will remain under observation at the hospital for up to five days to ensure her continued well-being.

Chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. praised the swift response of local citizens and authorities.

“This rescue reflects the sense of care and responsibility that President Marcos expects from our law enforcement officers. Every life is valuable, and the PNP will not rest until we identify the individual who abandoned this child,” he said in the PNP’s official statement.
