Christian Horner and wife Geri make public appearance together after major update given

Christian Horner and Geri Halliwell were in attendance as Coventry City took on Watford in the Championship on Saturday afternoon, with the couple cheering for opposite teams

Christian Horner and his wife Geri Halliwell found themselves on opposing sides as they took in a football match in a rare public outing. The former Formula 1 team principal has been out of work since he was axed by Red Bull Racing earlier this year.

Horner, 51, has largely kept a low profile since he was removed from his position in July after the British Grand Prix. He has made few public appearances and has embraced the opportunity to spend more time with his Spice Girls singer wife Geri and their children.

But he has been making moves in private, since agreeing an £80million deal to officially terminate his Red Bull contract, which was due to run until 2030. Horner is widely tipped to make a comeback to the paddock and is rumoured to be considering a fresh venture, having negotiated the end date of his gardening leave.

Horner, who will be free to return to F1 from next April, is said to have been approached by a string of ultra-wealthy investors. They are reportedly ready to back a whopping £1.5billion acquisition of an existing team, with Horner seeking total control of a team rather than just being a team principal again.

There is also speculation that Horner might aim to use that financial backing to create a new team, which would be the 12th on the grid after Cadillac make their debut in 2026. FIA chiefs are not believed to be against the idea of him making a comeback in this way.

For now, though, the 51-year-old has plenty of spare time and is using it to indulge in his favourite pastimes. Last month, it was reported that he whisked his wife Geri off on a long-planned road trip around Scotland.

And on Saturday, the pair were seen in the crowd at the Coventry Building Society Arena as the Sky Blues faced off against Watford. The home side, managed by England legend Frank Lampard, kept their promotion hopes alive with a 3-1 win, leaving Horner thrilled at the final whistle.

He is Coventry fan due to his family connections – his grandfather worked for the Standard Motor Company in the West Midlands and had ties with the club. Geri, on the other hand, is a Watford supporter and would have been devastated with the outcome of the match.

Last year, Horner confirmed his football loyalties on talkSPORT when he said: “My grandad was involved in Coventry City, so we were Sky Blues supporters growing up. I’ll be going along to have a look and support Frank.”

Horner’s former team, Red Bull, are set to compete in the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix this weekend, where Max Verstappen is aiming to bolster his championship aspirations with back-to-back victories. The Dutch driver trails leader Oscar Piastri by 40 points with just five races left, and he’s well aware that nothing short of perfection will secure a fifth consecutive title.

Speaking ahead of the race in Mexico, he said: “I just want to try and win races until the end of the season. I hope it’s possible every weekend, but it’s impossible to know at the moment. We are on a good run, and we also know as a team that it needs to be perfect till the end to have a chance.

“If it works, great, unbelievable comeback. If it doesn’t work, you just continue. You can be proud of the end-of-season performance and the upswing in form, but don’t worry about that in Abu Dhabi.”
