Clothes will dry quickly in a tumble dryer if you add 1 common household item to load

By staff26 October 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

A laundry expert has shared a simple hack that will help you dry your clothes quicker – and you’ll only need one household item that everyone owns to do it.

One of the most irritating aspects of doing the washing is waiting for garments to dry, particularly when there’s something in there we’re desperate to wear again. When tackling laundry, getting clothes dry quickly is crucial not only for daily routines but also for preventing musty smells and maintaining that fresh-washed fragrance.

Fortunately, there’s no shortage of online tricks that claim to accelerate the drying process. Posting on her Instagram account @alifebetterorganized, where she shares advice on cleaning and household matters, Debbie Sandlet revealed her “best laundry tip” – speeding up your garments’ drying time using a dry towel.

Whilst there are several items you should never place in your tumble dryer, a dry towel certainly isn’t among them.

Debbie explained: “Adding a dry towel will help to absorb some of the moisture while the wet and dry items mix. This reduces the humidity in the dryer, thus allowing the clothes to dry quicker.

“It also adds bulk to fluff and separates the clothes, helping them dry more efficiently.”, reports the Express.

The technique doesn’t just reduce drying time – it also consumes less energy, meaning you’re likely to cut costs in the process.

For “best results”, only leave for between five and 15 minutes, depending on load.

You simply want to remove some of the initial dampness, not burden the machine with another soggy item to dry. Leaving it in your tumble dryer for the entire cycle can actually reintroduce dampness into your clothes and slow down the drying process.

Although this trick is safe, it’s not advised to use it with your finest towels to avoid the risk of the fibres becoming coarse during the drying process.

It should also be self-evident that using a soiled towel is not a wise move.
