Bruno Guimaraes reveals plane nightmare as flight forced to divert after mid-air scare

By staff27 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Bruno Guimaraes was involved in a flight horror show as windows broke on his plane midway through his journey, forcing the Newcastle ace back to where he began

Bruno Guimaraes has opened up on a plane journey fright that saw his flight turn around due to a broken window – but admits he slept through the entire saga.

The Newcastle ace and his club team-mate Joelinton were flying out ahead of international duty but the Brazilian duo saw their flight from Amsterdam to South Korea turn back due to a major fault. It was all part of a 12,000-mile journey that eventually saw them travel on separate flights to Seoul.

Guimaraes helped Brazil hammer South Korea before they were stunned by Japan and admits he was blissfully unaware of the emergency u-turn because he was in the midst of a snooze – before it was all explained to him.

He said: “Two windows broke in the middle of the flight. We were in the middle of the air and could not stop, so we had to fly back. So we lost a few hours to it. Amsterdam to Amsterdam… I’ve never seen this before.

“I was sleeping. I just woke up and said, ‘Two hours to come back to Amsterdam?’ I didn’t understand anything. But after they explained to me that it was moving a lot during the flight. I was not scared. After, when I knew, I was a little bit. But during the flight, I was okay.”

Guimaraes was on hand to score Newcastle’s last minute winner on Saturday as they beat Fulham at St James’ Park. The midfielder had missed a golden opportunity in the second-half, heading over from close range, before he was on hand to convert in the final moments.

It was only their third win from nine games following an inconsistent start to the season but attention will now shift to the defence of their Carabao Cup. Eddie Howe’s side welcome Tottenham to the north east this week with their Brazilian midfielder underlining the determination within the squad.

He said: “It means a lot. We want to keep making history. We went 70 years without a win, but we can make it two in two. It’s a big possibility, a big opportunity, so we don’t want to miss it. It’s going to be a big game for us and we hope we’re gonna be ready for taking advantage in the game.

“It’s a big moment, and even more because we won last season. We want to do it again, keep making history, against a great and very focused team.”

Guimaraes became the first Newcastle skipper to lift a trophy in 70 years when he hoisted aloft the trophy at Wembley following their win over Liverpool.
