Inter Milan goalkeeper Josep Martinez struck and killed an 81-year-old man in a tragic road incident on his way to training. It’s being reported that the man, who was on his electric wheelchair, had suffered a medical episode just before the impact, meaning that he was unable to move away from the oncoming traffic.
Reports in Italy explain that Martinez, 27, was driving to training on Tuesday morning when he struck a man in a wheelchair at 9:40am. The incident happened on Via Bergamo in Fenegro, in the province of Como, near Inter’s training centre, Appiano Gentile.
Martinez is said to have immediately stopped and provided first aid. The elderly man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, despite the prompt arrival of an ambulance and an air ambulance.
Italian Police are carrying out an investigation. In light of the news, Inter have cancelled manager Cristian Chivu’s press conference which was scheduled for 1pm.
The Italian side are due to play Fiorentina at San Siro on Wednesday. Martinez is Inter’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Yann Sommer and he was on the bench for Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Napoli.
Having joined Inter in 2024 from Genoa, the Spaniard has made 12 appearances for the club. Martinez came through at Las Palmas after spending time in Barcelona’s famous academy, La Masia.
The 27-year-old moved to RB Leipzig in 2020 before signing for Genoa two years later.
