Remove years of grease from your oven with 3 household items

By staff11 November 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

Cleaning an oven is a daunting task, but one woman has shared a simple way to remove grease and food spillage from the oven and it only requires three basic household items.

Ovens inevitably gather grease, food spills and particles. However, the amount of mess that builds up really depends on who’s using the oven, what they’re cooking and how often they use it.

This makes it tricky to put a specific time frame on when you should clean your oven, as some ovens may be used more frequently than others, and different foods can create different levels of mess.

Typically, it’s suggested that ovens should be cleaned every 12 weeks or whenever homeowners spot burnt-on food stains. But for those like Ashley McCrary, also known as @jealthylittlepeach on Instagram, who constantly use their oven but only manage to clean it once a year, there are three basic things she swears by.

In her Instagram post, she confessed: “I’m not ashamed to admit…..I clean my oven once a year. So when I clean it, I have to put in the work because it’s nasty, y’all!”.

She suggests mixing washing-up liquid with baking soda and white vinegar to get rid of oven grease, reports the Express.

Combine half a cup of washing-up liquid with one and a half cups of baking soda and three-quarters of a cup of vinegar in a bowl.

Ashley highlighted that when you add the vinegar, it will “have a reaction”.

She advised: “Just allow it to sit for a few minutes, and the foam will go down. Add to your oven evenly and allow to sit two to three hours.”

After it’s had time to sit, give it a good scrub. You might need a bit of elbow grease depending on how dirty it is.

Ashley explained: “Use a spray bottle with water if it gets too crusty.

“Wipe down with a damp rag, then remove any residue with paper towels.”

One person in the comments tried the technique themselves and achieved brilliant results. @laurasimmons_37 commented: “Just finished cleaning my oven with your method! Holy smokes! My oven looks brand new. And when I say it was nasty, I mean it was nasty.

“I let the stuff sit for three hours and then spritzed it with water to soften it up, and then started scraping. Magic! It took some time, but so worth it.”
