Cleaning expert Debbie Young from Scrub Hub shared a “simple and effective” way to banish mould from washing machine seals – and it costs just a few pennies.
Whilst mould is an extremely common cleaning problem that plagues numerous areas of a washing machine, many people overlook the rubber seal surrounding their washing machine door.
The rubber seal tends to accumulate moisture, grime, and detergent residue, which can rapidly result in mould growth. This doesn’t just impact the washing machine’s sealing capability but can also shorten its lifespan and contaminate your clothes with marks, odours, and unwelcome dirt.
Yet, according to cleaning expert Debbie Young from Scrub Hub, rather than turning to aggressive bleach, there’s a “simple and effective” solution sitting in your kitchen cupboards. She suggests using dishwasher tablets – something numerous households will have available.
Dishwasher tablets, brilliant at tackling grease, marks, and smells in dishwashers, are just as effortless when cleaning your washing machine, reports the Express.
Debbie warned against hiring a professional or spending money on costly detergents, explaining: “You don’t need to hire a professional to dismantle and deep clean your machine or use any pricy washing machine detergents. Traditional dishwasher tabs are a cheap and powerful option.”
To demonstrate the strength of dishwasher tablets, Debbie explained: “To clean filthy dishes, cooking utensils, cutlery, and cookware, we combine the power of hot water in a dishwasher and throw in a cleaning tab. This combo is equally efficient at getting rid of residue from the inside of washing machines.”
Removing mould from your washing machine is straightforward with dishwasher tablets, making it simple to maintain this household essential in pristine condition. Ensure your washer is empty and place one or two dishwasher tablets directly into the drum.
Add some water to the dispenser compartment and select a hot 90-degree setting for your machine, then allow it to complete its cycle. After the wash, take a clean cloth or sponge to wipe down the rubber seal – any grimy mould should come away easily.
Prevent future mould growth by leaving the door slightly open after washing, allowing the seal to dry completely, stopping new mould from developing.

Debbie said: “Set it to a hot wash and let the machine and tablet do the work for you. When the cycle is complete, you can use the machine as usual, and it will be clean and smell great!”.
