Using this one product every day could be the key to preventing wrinkles, fine lines, dark spots and more
When it comes to our skin, it feels like there can be so many things to worry about.
From a young age I’ve been obsessed with my skin after a bout of horrific teen acne – but as we grow older, it becomes less about pimple prevention (though that’s still a big concern) and more about how to prevent dark spots, how to combat redness, and when do you really need to start using anti-ageing cream?
Well, despite social media and TikTok skinfluencers telling us otherwise, a Boots expert told me to ditch the anti-ageing cream in favour of a different product, hailing it as ‘the best way to stop skin from ageing’.

I headed to the high street favourite’s newest branch – their beauty-only store at Battersea Power Station for their free ‘skin scan’, which is a walk-in skin imaging and analysis service that looks into a range of skin concerns like redness, uv damage, wrinkles and fine lines.
Towards the back of the new concept store, which opened on December 6, there is a NEXA skin imaging tool. I met up with a very helpful skincare specialist who talked me through the process and results, giving me in-depth analysis, advice and brand-neutral product recommendations.
I rested my face against the imaging machine – a bit like the ones you get at the opticians – and had close up images of my face taken by the machine. I was then shown the images with various filters over them, which flagged up any areas of concern, although I was surprised to discover that my skin is overall very healthy and ‘in the green’ for every single one of the tests.
In fact, my customer assistant asked me if I’d had Botox, impressed by my lack of forehead wrinkles (yes, I went home and proceeded to smugly tell everyone about it). Similarly, I don’t have a great deal of redness, nor do I have any emerging age spots, which are a key indicator of UV damage.
But for me, the main take away was that I don’t really need to be using any intensive anti-ageing creams at age 26. The beauty specialist told me: “The one product that will best help prevent ageing is SPF. You don’t need anti-ageing cream – SPF is the key to keeping your skin protected, which will in turn keep it looking healthy and youthful.”
The science behind this is that SPF protects the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, which are one of the biggest contributors to ageing skin. No7 said: “Protecting your skin from the sun is absolutely essential in helping to slow down the development of signs of ageing, as exposure to the sun’s UV rays can result in photoaging – wrinkling, loss of elasticity and dark spots.
“UV radiation can also cause collagen (the protein needed for healthy, plump skin) to break down at a much faster rate than usual. As such, it’s important to incorporate products with sun protection into your daily anti-ageing skincare routine.”
Now I know I should be applying SPF every day – yes, even in winter – but I have to admit that I’m guilty of not doing so. That said, I’ll now be making it my utmost priority every morning, and have been taking a look at which is the best to buy.
The La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50 seems to be a really popular choice with shoppers, who have given it a 4.4 star rating based on over 800 reviews, many of which praise it for leaving no white cast, making it suitable for a range of skin tones, too.
One said: “I really like this sun cream! I have very sensitive and dry skin and this gives me the perfect glow all day. It never feels oily and never leaves a white cast. Even if I get it in my eyes it doesn’t sting at all!”
Another added: “SPF is a super important step in any skincare routine and it’s not just for the summer months, it’s all year round!! This SPF fluid is amazing , better for oily skin as it goes on quite dry! It sinks in beautiful and leaves no white cast, there isn’t really a scent to it, make up goes on top absolutely fine too! Highly recommend!”
However, some say the formula is a little too runny for them, and wrote: “The actual product does what it promises – it’s beautifully lightweight, sinks in easily and doesn’t leave a white cast. More importantly it doesn’t affect my eczema-prone skin too much. However, the product is so runny it’s more or less impossible to apply without spilling loads, which feels terribly wasteful – and it’s not a cheap product. Will try the cream next to see if this is any better.”
How about a celeb-approved pick, though? Amber Turner from The Only Way Is Essex has previously revealed that she uses the L’Oréal Revitalift Clinical SPF50+ Invisible Fluid .
“A factor 50 is essential and I love this L’Oreal Paris one. It leaves no white cast and it makes your skin look amazing. It works as a great primer as well,” Amber explains in one of her TikTok videos.
Usually £19.99, the L’Oreal option is now less than £10 on the Boots website , as well as being reduced on Amazon.
Another highly recommended SPF is the Ambre Solaire Super UV Anti Dark Spots & Anti Pollution Face Fluid SPF50+ 40ml, which is now 46 per cent off at Amazon, down to £7, compared to £13 at Boots, which proves you don’t need to break the bank to stay protected.
I think based on the reviews, I’m going to go for the La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50 to protect my skin from UV rays and prevent ageing, alternatively you can find some of the Mirror beauty team’s top picks here .
