The New York Jets and New York Giants have struggled on offense in the 2024 NFL season, and those issues were highlighted by Notre Dame’s 51-14 rout of Navy on Saturday
The New York Jets and New York Giants have had a disastrous start to the NFL season, with their lack of skill being highlighted by Notre Dame at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
The Jets and Giants have only managed six touchdowns in six games at their shared stadium this season. The Jets and Aaron Rodgers are now 2-6 after losing to the Patriots on Sunday, while the Giants are 2-5 with a trip to Pittsburgh on Monday to face the Steelers.
Their poor form was made worse by Saturday’s college football match between No.12 Fighting Irish and No.24 Navy in New Jersey, where Notre Dame stormed to a 51-14 victory.
The Irish scored seven touchdowns in just 60 minutes of football against a previously unbeaten team, highlighting the struggles of quarterbacks Rodgers, Daniel Jones and their respective offenses this season. Riley Leonard led the way for the Irish, throwing for 178 yards and two touchdowns as well as 83 yards and a score on the ground.
Running backs Jeremiyah Love and Kedren Young also contributed, finding the endzone twice and once respectively as Notre Dame took full advantage of the excellent field position provided by its dominant defense.
Beaux Collins and Kris Mitchell caught touchdown passes from Leonard to complete the rout in a display of offensive efficiency that Jets and Giants fans can only dream of.
“We can’t lose the pain,” said Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman after Sunday’s win. “That’s what I want to make sure our guys understand. I don’t want to lose the pain from that game because at times we are motivated by fear.
“We don’t want this to repeat itself. We’ve got to use that. We’re going to be grateful for it if we utilize it and we learn from the lessons it’s taught us. When you have success sometimes, you forget about that pain of what NIU left in all of our hearts and our guts. There’s moments I want to reflect on that and I don’t want them to lose it.”
The Jets’ aggressive strategy to shape up as a serious contender strikes a sour note with fans, especially with star signing and four-time MVP Rodgers hampered by injury last season and showing a dip in form this year. Starting 2024 with high hopes of a Super Bowl chase, the Jets are now struggling to stay above .500 after a tough eight-week stretch.
