An old castle hidden away in the forest in the west of Scotland was once a glamorous and prestigious home where notable names once stayed – but is now unrecognisable inside after being abandoned for 70 years
An old Castle nestled in Scotland may look derelict and covered in nature now – but it was once slept in by a Prime Minister and a famous star’s family.
Dalquharran Castle, built around 1790 by Robert Adam is located in a South Ayrshire forest, underneath Glasgow, and around six miles from the coastal town of Girvan. It was designated a category A listed building.
The spectacular abode was once stayed at by former Prime Minister Herbert Asquith and the great-grandfather of Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland actress Helena Bonham-Carter also stayed there.
However it’s been sadly abandoned for 70 years as it became too big and expensive to maintain following the end of World War Two according to The Daily Record. In 1967, the lead roof was removed from the castle, meaning the owners could declare it as uninhabitable and avoid paying rates.
After being derelict for so long, photos from 2017 show a sad reality of what remains in the once prestigious castle as it lays in ruin – and entry now forbidden for safety. The greenery growing through now shows the reality of how it has been left as we share some photos from Dalquharran Castle.
