‘Absolute machine’ Sean Bowen keeps up incredible ‘winner a day’ momentum

By staff1 October 2025No Comments2 Mins Read

The 28-year-old Welshman has ridden 93 winners in the first 93 days of the 2025-26 season, twice as many as his nearest rival, younger brother James

Britain’s reigning champion jump jockey is setting a scorching pace in his defence of the crown he won for the first time last season. Welshman Sean Bowen rode 180 winners last term to make his title breakthrough, after injury had cost him the crown won by Harry Cobden the season before.

In his determination to keep hold of the championship he has started the new campaign in relentless fashion. With 93 winners, he is already 53 winners clear of his nearest pursuer, his younger brother James who is on 40, and more than halfway to matching last season’s tally with five months of the campaign to come.

The 28-year-old rode 26 winners in May, 20 in June, 15 in July, 7 in August when there are fewer jumps fixtures, and 25 in September.

He still has a long way to go to reach 20-time champion Sir AP McCoy’s record of most winners in a single season with 289 victories.

Bowen has been keeping score and revealed in a post on his X account, “There are 93 days of racing up to the end of September from the start of the season.

“I wanted to try and ride as close to a winner a day as I could in that time. Today, on the last day of September, I hit 93 winners for the season.”

Fans were quick to congratulate the champion, some comparing him to the legendary McCoy.

One replied: “That’s because you’re absolutely top drawer and one of the best jockeys I’ve seen in 30 years. Your brother is top drawer too. Well done.”

Another said: “Honestly just love watching you getting 150 percent out of a horse. For me you are up there with McCoy and time will tell if you surpass his records.”

In a similar vein another post said: “You’re an absolute machine. In this frame of mind you could give AP a run for his money and that’s not something I thought I would ever say.”
