Alan Shearer blasts Evangelos Marinakis after Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest exit

By staff19 October 2025No Comments4 Mins Read

Ange Postecoglou was brutally sacked by Nottingham Forest this weekend after just 39 days in charge of the club, with the Australian winning just two points from his eight matches.

Nottingham Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, has been urged to shoulder some of the responsibility for the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou from the City Ground. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur gaffer’s stint at the helm of the Tricky Trees was a brief one.

It lasted only 39 days after taking over from popular Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo in early September. Postecoglou’s reign is the second shortest managerial tenure ever, with Sam Allardyce’s 30-day stint at Leeds holding the record.

Alan Shearer, former Newcastle United striker, expressed sympathy for the departing 60-year-old head coach on BBC show Match of the Day. That’s despite Postecoglou failing to secure a win in any of his eight games in charge.

Shearer stated: “I do have sympathy for him [Postecoglou]. The owner has to accept his share of the blame.

“He went out and chose this particular manager, knowing that he had a completely different system to what the previous manager had got.

“But five Premier League games? You absolutely have sympathy for him. [Chelsea manager, Enzo] Maresca said it, didn’t he? You know the rules in football.

“If you don’t get results in football, immediately, unfortunately, you’re going to lose your job.” His sacking came as no surprise to many after a defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

During his time in charge, Postecoglou managed just two draws from his eight games – losing the remaining six – which left the club languishing third from bottom at the time of his departure. His exit arrives merely days following an explosive press conference outburst – where Postecoglou delivered an almost five-minute monologue addressing mounting pressure and ongoing speculation surrounding his position.

“Look, I guess from my perspective I just don’t fit,” Postecoglou said. “Not here, just in general. If you look at it through the prism of I’m a failed manager who’s lucky to get this job – I know you’re smirking at me, but that’s what’s being said, right, and I can find the print where that’s actually said – then of course these first five weeks look like, this guy is under pressure.

“There is an alternative story that you can look at here. I came to the Premier League two years ago, I took over Tottenham – ‘Spursy’ Tottenham. I was told by the chairman at the time that this club has to win a trophy. Has to win a trophy.

“He said, we’ve tried to bring winners in – Jose [Mourinho] and Antonio [Conte] – and it hasn’t worked, we need something different. I was slightly offended by that because I see myself as a winner.”
