Alan Shearer names two key Liverpool transfers that can fuel title defence

Alan Shearer has been impressed by Liverpool’s transfer business this summer and highlighted two key signings he will be keeping an eye on.

The Premier League’s record goalscorer hailed the defending champions as being particularly savvy – and they are still linked with his former club Newcastle United’s star striker, Alexander Isak.

Liverpool have already made a number of additions having seen Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez depart the club – splashing the cash on the likes of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Right-back Jeremie Frimpong also arrived from the German club while left-back Milos Kerkez was signed from Bournemouth. And Shearer, 54, was quick to point out their strong business amid an exciting summer.

“The signings at Liverpool have been really interesting,” Shearer, speaking at the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection, said. “A right-back, left-back. [Florian] Wirtz is another one, [Hugo] Ekitike is another one.

“There are so many intriguing bits to look forward to. And [Viktor] Gyokeres at Arsenal, it will be interesting to see how he goes after blowing the Portuguese league wide.

“The [number of] goals that he scores is phenomenal, whether we can do that [in the Premier League ] remains to be seen.” The former No.9-turned pundit believes the expenditure of the top four is shaping up a thrilling season in the Premier League.

He pointed out the battle to penetrate that dominant quad of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City could provide some enthralling encounters. “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be such an intriguing season,” he said.

“The chasing pack – Newcastle, Villa, Brighton, Spurs, maybe Man United, maybe a few others – are trying to somehow get into the top four with what the top four have spent in Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, so it’s going to be a fascinating season.

“Some of the signings [have been great], and obviously it’s not finished yet, so I’m really excited.” Shearer himself scored 260 goals while in the Premier League with Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers.

And while he anticipates excitement, he cannot foresee any major upsets coming from further down the table. “I don’t think there’ll be any massive surprises. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Brighton were there because of what they’ve done,” he said.

“Villa are chasing but haven’t made as many signings as they maybe want, Bournemouth have had to sell and [Illya] Zabarnyi may be going to PSG as well.

“At the bottom, the teams that have come up, history tells us it’s going to be very, very difficult for those three to stay up.”

The all-time Premier League record goalscorer was speaking at the launch of the new Topps Premier League 2026 which features players from all 20 clubs in the league in their 2025/26 kits at the Fanatics flagship store on Thursday .

He was joined by other legends such as Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand to celebrate the new stand-alone range that features legends and current stars, with an extensive parallel programme and more autographs than ever before.

And it brought a moment of nostalgia for the star who remembered the excitement of collecting the cards as a youngster.

“Obviously [collecting for] all the World Cups and Euros comes to mind,” recalled Shearer. “It’s pretty addictive, isn’t it? Once you get one, you want to open another and another and another and it’s nonstop. So yeah, I loved it.

“I just remember thinking, I’ve opened one packet and you’ve got to open another one straight away. That was my memory of doing it.”

Marking the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection were football icons Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand, joined by Jermaine Defoe, Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Tosin Adarabioyo, alongside Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in a star-studded celebration.
