Aldi apologies after claiming back ‘crown’ from Lidl and shoppers are in stitches

Aldi has left fans laughing after sharing a tongue-in-cheek post about Lidl and say ‘all good things must come to an end’ after the supermarket claimed back one particular crown this month

Aldi has issued an update about Lidl after claiming back the title of cheapest supermarket of the month. Aldi had proudly held the title for an impressive 20 consecutive months, but in July Lidl claimed the top spot. However after being named cheapest supermarket in August 2025, Aldi has issued a petty message online. “All good things must come to an end,” the Aldi team wrote on social media.

It comes as every month Which? compares thousands of prices at the UK’s major supermarkets – Aldi, Asda, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose – to reveal the cheapest supermarket to buy your food, drink and household essentials. Back in July, Lidl beat Aldi for the first time as it charged £128.40 on average for shopping, but it wasn’t too long until Aldi claimed back the crown.

In an update this month Which? stated: “Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in August, regaining the top spot from Lidl. It charged £127.92 on average for our shopping list of 75 branded and own-label groceries.

“Asda was the cheapest of the traditional supermarkets, with the same list of groceries costing £139.42, even though it doesn’t offer loyalty discounts in the same way as its rivals. Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket, at £172.61 – that’s 35% more than Aldi.”

Aldi shared their reaction and tongue-in-cheek comments on social media following the news.

The supermarket said: “Apparently we’ve got some apologising to do. Lidl, we’re really, actually, properly sorry. We know winning Which? cheapest basket last month was the highlight of your year.”

The post added: “Bet you even treated yourself to a slice of that f-tier caterpillar cake in celebration. We took our 2nd place with pride. After all, we’d already won every month since November 2023. Be the bigger shop etc. Not like anyone’s doing a Lidl price match are they?”.

The supermarket concluded: “Alas, all good things must come to an end. The results are in, and we’re back on top. Again. For the 21st time. That’ll teach us for planning the summer party on submissions night. Love, Aldi P.S our middle aisle is better than yours.”

One commented: “These post give me life. So funny.” “This is brilliant,” added another. “I will forever love the sass,” said one other.

Another wrote: “You guys all deserve a raise. The banter is always quality.”

“Aldi throwing shade at every other supermarket,” observed another.

One other fan said: “At a time when the country feels like it’s going to pot, I’m really loving the banter between you guys. Keep it up, it’s making me smile.”

One other said: “We love Aldi and the fact other supermarkets over price goods so they have too copy Aldi.”

“You said it, not us,” wrote Aldi in response.
