Some claimed the little green berries were ‘addictive’ to snack on and tasted ‘lovely’
Aldi shoppers have spotted a rarely-seen fruit on UK shop shelves this week, and it has people divided. Looking past its unique appearance, people could benefit from lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels by snacking on this green fruit.
Packets of kiwiberries were spotted in store by a user who shared the news on the Money Saver by Dansway Facebook page. The price tag shows that a 125g punnet will cost shoppers £1.89, down from £1.99.
Despite sounding like these berries have been whipped up in a laboratory as a mad science fusion, kiwiberries are, in fact, a naturally occurring fruit that simply shares a lot of common genetic traits with the common kiwi fruit. They are native to East Asia, originating in northern and eastern China, and are also found in the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
One said: “Got some today and they’re very yummy!” Another added: “These are the weirdest most amazing berries I think I’ve ever tasted!”
A third put: “These are addictive” I bought one pack then later that day bought two more!” Someone else suggested: “I had these the other day, they were lovely. Not furry like a kiwi, just smooth and a lot easier to eat [as they] don’t need peeling. I cut up and put in my yoghurt.”
However, some were not convinced by the fruit. One claimed: “They are rank, taste nothing like kiwis!” Another added: “I tried these the other day and can say I’m not a fan either!”
A third put: “If you get a decent pack, they are nice. But unfortunately, mine were hard and sour. So disappointing.”
Kiwiberries are in season at the moment, between August and October. This means that supermarkets which stock them – like Aldi, Sainsbury’s and M&S – should have them available to purchase.

According to Berry World, these little green berries look very much like the original kiwi fruit once bitten into. However, the key difference beyond their size is that fact that “unlike their larger cousin, the berry version does not have furry skin.”
The site added: “These baby kiwis are more nutrient-dense in vitamins and minerals than regular kiwi fruits. They are high in vitamin C and a source of fibre, which makes them ideal for lunchboxes and a great alternative snack to sweets and biscuits.”
Kiwiberries are one of the richest sources of lutein, a compound that is beneficial for eye health. The high fibre content in kiwiberries helps regulate digestion and can contribute to lower cholesterol levels and balanced blood sugar. Their low glycemic index ensures they do not cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, making them a suitable fruit choice for people with diabetes.
