Alec Baldwin reportedly contemplated suicide after the Rust shooting, according to his wife Hilaria. The actor’s wife shared emotional text messages from Alec, revealing the mental toll the incident took on him.
Actor Alec Baldwin contemplated suicide after the Rust shooting, according to claims made by his wife, Hilaria.
The actor was involved in a court case related to the shooting on the set of the movie Rust. On October 21, 2021, Alec accidentally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, causing her death, and injured director Joel Souza while using a prop gun. The incident happened during a rehearsal at a ranch in New Mexico.
In 2022, Alec was charged with involuntary manslaughter, meaning he was accused of causing someone’s death through careless actions. However, the charges were dropped in 2023 after new evidence emerged. Alec still faced a civil lawsuit from Hutchins’ family, and in March 2023, he and the producers of Rust settled with the family, agreeing to a financial settlement.
Alec faced criticism for not checking the gun before using it, as safety on film sets is very important. He denied any intentional wrongdoing, stating that he did not pull the trigger and that the gun went off accidentally.
Hilaria, has now shared she received ‘heart wrenching’ text messages from her husband in the aftermath of the Rust incident. This insight came in a recent instalment of their new reality series, The Baldwins, which allows viewers a glimpse into their household and parenting experiences with their seven kids.
Revealing the text to her friend, Hilaria said: “I found these text messages the other day, between us, you know, the day after. And you know, he said he wanted to kill himself.” Hilaria told the cameras: “He has survivor’s guilt. You’re involved in this thing that nobody could even possibly imagine. And so it goes back to that day. He wishes it were him. He would change places in a second. This has affected his health, and his mental health tremendously.
“The past few years, all of the sudden he started having heart problems. He’s been hospitalized multiple times. He’s fainted… everybody’s just screaming, I’m going, I’m on top, and I’m shaking him. It’s hard sometimes. But hopefully we’re in the hardest, but tail end of it.”
The Baldwins, which premiered on Sunday 23rd February, was made as Alec prepared for his trial for involuntary manslaughter over the accidental shooting of Halyna, an event that happened on set four years prior – charges that were ultimately dropped, reports the Irish Star.
In the show’s second episode, the couple are seen bracing themselves for his upcoming court date, while opening up about the tremendous toll the situation has taken on their lives. Alec candidly shared the struggles he faced, revealing dark periods marked by an unwillingness to even leave his bed.
He said: “There was a period all this last year where I’d lay in bed and I’d think I don’t want to get out of bed. I’d think to myself my children are downstairs having breakfast.” He credits his wife with being his rock through these challenging times, saying: “The last year was the year which I think that they noticed I was really really down. But the person who saved me was my wife because she got up. There were times she didn’t want to either but she did, that’s the difference.”
