A huge flurry of snow, ice and wind warnings have been issued this weekend as Storm Bert begins to sweep across the UK.
Flights were grounded, train services delayed and motorways battered by blizzard conditions on Saturday as the storm swept in from the Atlantic, with weather experts forecasting a “multi-hazard” mix of adverse weather to follow over the next 24 hours.
The storm claimed its first victim just before 1am as temperatures plunged and Storm Bert swept in. A 34-year-old man died at the scene after his Renault Captur collided with the stone wall in Shipley, West Yorks.
In the north of England and parts of Scotland, heavy snow fell for several hours this morning and disrupted travel – but further south, people have been warned to expect dangerous high winds and possible flooding.
Jason Kelly, Met Office Chief Meteorologist, said: “Storm Bert starts to arrive overnight on Friday and into Saturday, initially over Northern Ireland. As we go through the first part of Saturday morning, it will start to show its hand across Scotland, north Wales and northern England, with the potential for some heavy snowfall, especially over higher ground.
“Warnings are in place, including an amber warning for snow and ice for parts of Scotland.” Here’s a full list of areas currently covered by Met Office weather alerts – including ‘act now’ amber warnings and less severe yellow weather warnings:
