The 35-year-old actress, who showed up in American Pie Presents: The Book Of Love, said she was forced to sleep in a cell
American Pie star Jasmine Mooney claimed she was detained by ICE when she tried to travel to the US from Mexico for work.
The 35-year-old actress, who showed up in American Pie Presents: The Book Of Love, said she was forced to sleep in a cell when she attempted to enter the US from Mexico after her old visa was revoked. The star was reportedly detained at the San Ysidro border crossing between Mexico and San Diego earlier this month.
According to the star, the guards were confused and questioned what ‘she was doing there’ as she’s Canadian. Jasmine revealed US officials revoked her work visa back in November while she was trying to get from Vancouver to Los Angeles. On her lawyer’s advice, she travelled to the border crossing this month with a new job offer and the visa paperwork.
However, the border agent said she needed to get a new visa at a US consulate and proceeded to detain her. The star went on to claim they didn’t let her return to Mexico and sent her to the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego.
She said to Team 10: “I was put in a cell, and I had to sleep on a mat with no blanket, no pillow, with an aluminium foil wrapped over my body like a dead body for two and a half days.” Jasmine said she was transferred to a facility in Arizona and was woken up in the middle of the night and even held in chains for the journey.
A spokesperson for ICE said: “Jasmine Mooney was detained March 3 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for not having legal documentation to be in the United States. Mooney was processed in accordance with the “Securing Our Borders” Executive Order dated January 21. All aliens in violation of U.S. immigration law may be subject to arrest, detention and, if found removable by final order, removal from the U.S., regardless of nationality.”
According to Team 10, the health tonic drink she co-founded, Holy! Water, contains Delta-9 ‘full spectrum hemp’. The publication noted the border agents could have taken issue with her employment with the drinks company. Any product containing more than 0.3% of THC is considered a controlled substance in the US.
US Customs and Border Protection told Team 10 there could be as many as 60 reasons to detain someone, with CBP claiming they treat “all travellers with integrity, respect and professionalism.” On March 13, Mooney said she had no idea when she will be released, with her best friend trying to put pressure on the Canadian government to help.
“I just feel like there has to be more that they can do this. This can’t be right. It can’t be allowed to happen,” Brittany Kors said to the publication.
