Andre Onana to finally seal Man Utd transfer as under-fire goalkeeper agrees loan exit

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to leave the club on loan, with United’s transfer deadline day move for Senne Lammens pushing him down the pecking order

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to join Trabzonspor on loan. While Premier League clubs are not allowed to sign new players until the new year, the Turkish transfer window is one of a handful to remain open a little longer this month.

Onana moved to Old Trafford from Inter Milan in 2023 and spent the last two seasons as first choice. He was left out by Ruben Amorim at the start of the campaign, though, with Altay Bayindir between the sticks.

United added Senne Lammens to their ranks on Monday, paying a little over £18million for the young Belgian. The move appears to have accelerated Onana’s departure, though the move is a straightforward loan with no buy option included.

According to The Athletic, the Cameroon international’s United wages will be covered by the Turkish club. He is also entitled to bonuses which could see him double his current earnings.

Onana is due to complete his move after playing for Cameroon against Cape Verde. Victory would see the Indomitable Lions move to the top of their World Cup qualifying group, with all group winners progressing to next summer’s tournament and the four best runners-up getting a second chance via the play-offs.

Former Chelsea and Scotland star Craig Burley questioned Onana’s progress since his arrival at Old Trafford. “[He’s] another player who’s gone to Manchester United and got worse. He cost a lot of money but he wasn’t able to marshal a back four,” Burley told ESPN.

“I thought Onana would be the real deal, it looked that way in Italy. I thought he might have a Peter Schmeichel-esque aura about him and boss about players but it hasn’t happened. If this new, youngish lad comes in and starts flapping about all over the place, it’s going to be a mess.”

Lammens, 23, has outlined how he wants to earn the backing of the defenders in front of him. “I think if you want to be a good goalkeeper, you have to be a rock behind the defence,” he told club media.

“They have to trust you and count on you in difficult moments. That is something I take pride in. Of course, I can improve in this because the next level is bigger, but it is one of my attributes that I am proud of and I try to improve.

“My parents are also really calm and collected, but [I also developed this mentality] from growing up, when I was in the youth and I thought about the goalkeeper I wanted to become later in life, I think one of the best attributes you can have as a goalkeeper is staying calm under pressure, in any circumstances, even if you make a mistake or something. You just move on and try to give your best to the team.”
