Liverpool tried and failed with a bid to sign Anthony Gordon during the summer transfer window and the winger is now close to committing his future to Newcastle

Anthony Gordon is on the verge of signing a new contract with Newcastle – just months after telling his England team-mates that he was joining Liverpool.

The winger, 23, was the subject of interest from the Reds during the transfer window. However, a £75million move to Anfield collapsed alongside a separate deal which would have seen Joe Gomez move to St. James’ park.

Interest in Gordon has not waned, though, with both Liverpool and Arsenal keen on the former Everton man. A deal for Gordon could now be beyond them, though, amid reports he is close to agreeing a new deal with his current employers.

It’s been claim that the framework of a ‘lucrative new deal’ is in place after preliminary talks were held in the summer – but Gordon was seemingly planning for a transfer.

According to The Telegraph, the prospect of a move to Liverpool was enough to turn Gordon’s head during the summer, where he was part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final.

It’s outlined that he even told team-mates that the move was close to being a done deal amid Newcastle’s need to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). They found another solution, though, by selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton.

Gordon enjoyed a fine 2023/24 campaign to force his way into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the Euros. But despite racking up 21 goal contributions in 35 Premier League matches and being selected ahead of the likes of Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford, he only featured for one minute during England’s run to the final.

The report outlines that Southgate was aware of the transfer interest being shown in the player and subsequently chose not to involve him more. Gordon didn’t hold back with his comments after the tournament where he admitted he was gutted to hardly feature out in Germany.

Gordon said: “I was disappointed, because I believe in myself so much. I felt unstoppable, especially at that point of the season I had just had.‌

“I felt like no-one could defend me, no-one could deal with me over 90 minutes. I felt like I was ready to and really impress people and help the country win the trophy.‌

“To envision what I envisioned to what it was, it was disappointing.”
