Amazon is selling a pair of ‘anti-glare’ glasses that people say have made driving at night ‘easier’. Almost half of Brits admit they struggle to drive at night due to ‘dazzling’ headlights from oncoming cars.

Following research last winter by the Department for Transport (DfT) regarding headlights ‘blinding’ drivers, an update this month has revealed that the government is planning to launch a new assessment of the causes and remedies of bright LED car lights. Commenting on the news, Confused.com car insurance specialist Rhydian Jones said certain things could help, including some glasses lenses.

“With news that the government is looking to do more to investigate the causes and remedies for bright LED car lights, drivers will be relieved to know road conditions might get better in the long term,” he said. “As days have gotten shorter and darker, drivers around the UK may be feeling worried about struggling to see at night.

“Our research found that nearly half (48%) of drivers often have difficulty seeing the road due to glare from oncoming headlights. And more than one in four (28%) have lost sight of the road due to other drivers’ headlights. So, the government’s assessment to reduce the impact of headlights will be welcomed by many.”

Sharing advice, he said: “But for now, if you are struggling with other cars’ bright lights when driving, the best thing to do is to slow down and drive carefully. However, if it’s the car behind you which is dazzling, adjusting your rear-view mirror could help reduce glare. It also helps to keep your windscreen free from dirt, as this often creates glare too. And if you wear glasses, lenses with an anti-reflective coating could make a difference.”

Amazon is selling a pair of Boolavard Night Sight Driving Over Glasses for £8.99. The online marketplace says: “The yellow lens can reduce glare, add contrast to your vision and increase visual clarity when you drive at night, dusk or rainy day.

“Night vision glasses will balance the polarised and vision, which can cut the glare from the headlights and increase brightness. Ideal even for glasses wearers: you can leave your spectacles on and wear the Night Vision glasses on top comfortably.”

So far, the Boolavard Night Sight Driving Over Glasses has an average customer rating of 4.2 stars out of five from 8,677 reviews. Many customers find the night driving glasses ‘effective’ and ‘comfortable’, noting they fit well over their existing glasses and make night driving ‘safer’ and ‘easier’.

They also appreciate the glare reduction, with one customer mentioning they ‘can see in the dark’, while another says they work well on sunny days. Customers also consider the glasses ‘good value for money’ and praise their ‘quality’.

Besides Amazon, there are other retailers selling similar glasses. The Range is selling Clip On Anti Glare Polorized Night Driving Glasses for £11.99. Argos has JML PolaOptics Tortoise Polarised Sunglasses on sale for £15. Debenhams has reduced Rectangle Polarized FO4 Fit Over Glasses Night Driving Sunglasses from £65 to £22.

However, Amazon’s Boolavard Night Sight Driving Over Glasses are currently on offer at 10% less and have thousands of reviews. One person said: “A lifesaver at night whilst driving against these new bright headlines.”

A second said: “Brilliant. Excellent to drive at night. Much more confident now.” A third wrote: “A must have for driving and good price.” Another said: “These night driving glasses are great. I bought them because I’m light-sensitive, and they really helped cut down glare from headlights and streetlights. They fit comfortably over my regular glasses, though I’ll admit they do look a bit odd worn that way!”

But, some people shared a few issues. One person said: “Good glasses and they work. no container for glasses, though.” A second said: “Far too big. Keep falling down.” A third said: “Look and feel cheap plastic – like something you buy in a £1 shop.” A fourth put: “They just make everything look yellow and a little darker.”

The vast majority of reviews are positive though. Someone else said: “What a difference these make, when driving at night, and when it is foggy, makes eye sight/view, so much clearer.” One more said: “They do help with driving in the dark against being blinded by strong headlights.”

Another shared a “minor” issue, writing: “Bought these for the current wife who was complaining of night time glare when driving. These pop over her glasses and reduce glare well. Knocked off a star for fit, which she resolved with one of those drawstrings that clip on the arms and tighten across thee back of your head.”
