Anyone with dehumidifier should follow 20cm rule for best results

By staff1 October 2025No Comments3 Mins Read

The common dehumidifier mistake could decrease the efficiency of your machine

It’s that time of the year when homeowners start to think about the colder months ahead, and many use dehumidifiers to help prevent condensation, which can cause a build-up of mould and mildew.

The Centre for Sustainable Energy explained: “Condensation is the most common cause of damp. It’s easily recognised by the black mould it causes —small black dots that appear near cold surfaces like window frames.” However, households may not be aware that there are several common mistakes people make when using a dehumidifier.

Consumer champion Which? has shared a video warning against five of these mistakes, urging people to follow the 20cm rule for the best results.

The advice was shared on TikTok by @whichuk. The post was titled: “5 things you should never do with your dehumidifier.” The caption added: “Five mistakes to avoid if you want to get the most out of your dehumidifier.

“90% of dehumidifier owners we asked would recommend getting one for helping to dry laundry and preventing mould and damp.”

In the video, Which? said: “Five dehumidifier mistakes you need to avoid. 1. Never run the dehumidifier up against a wall or furniture. Most models should be placed in the centre of the room so the air circulates evenly, at least 20cm away from walls or furniture. Also make sure it’s not placed near any heat sources or vents, as this can affect its performance.

“2. Never run the dehumidifier with windows or external doors open. If it’s trying to also combat the humid air from outside, you won’t feel the benefits.” The advice continued: “3. Never let the filter get clogged up because it can stop the dehumidifier working efficiently.

“Manufacturers recommend cleaning it every two weeks or once a month. A quick, gentle vacuum with a brush attachment should work, but you might need to wash the filter if it’s very clogged up. Just check the manufacturer’s instructions.

“4. Never let wet clothes drip on the dehumidifier when drying them. It’s a potential fire hazard and could damage the dehumidifier. Make sure the dehumidifier is far enough away from the laundry and position it so the air coming out of it is directed towards the clothes.

“5. Never turn a desiccant dehumidifier off at the mains too quickly. You should always turn them off at the control panel on the machine. This way the fan continues to spin until it’s cooled down, which protects the internal parts.”

Ideal Home has shared similar advice, telling homeowners to place their dehumidifier at least 20cm away from any walls. Chloe King, Duux brand manager, told the publication: “For the best results, the dehumidifier should always be placed at least 20 centimetres away from every wall. In addition, we advise placing the device away from drafts from doors, windows, and air vents for optimal efficiency.”
