Police rushed to the scene of the Manchester suburb of New Moston with officers reportedly ‘all over’ nearby Nuthurst Road, Moston Lane East and Parkhurst Avenue
Armed police have descended on a city suburb and a school has locked down following reports of a “man with a knife”.
Greater Manchester Police rushed to a residential street in New Moston, a suburb of Manchester, this afternoon following reports that a member of staff at a doctor’s surgery was threatened with a knife. Armed officers were seen swarming the streets after a school was placed on lockdown, with a police helicopter seen circling overhead and people “all over”. Pictures show police cars stationed outside a nearby school, with other police vehicles driving down residential streets with their lights flashing.
The Manchester Evening News reports that others said the entrances to nearby Nurhurst park was “surrounded” by the officers at around 3pm, as GMP confirmed they were called to a doctor’s surgery.
While there were no reported injuries, the service said the suspect fled from the surgery before police arrived. Investigators are now working to trace him.
Nearby New Moston Primary School was placed on lockdown after the man fled the scene “as a precaution”, police added. A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed in a statement that the man “made off” from the surgery with the knife.
They said: “Emergency services were called to reports of a concern for welfare on Moston Lane East in Moston at around 2:17pm this afternoon.
“A man threated a member of staff at a doctor’s surgery with a knife and then made off from the surgery. Enquiries are ongoing to locate the man. No injuries have been reported.
“As a precaution a nearby primary school decided to go into lockdown.”
