Arne Slot has delivered an update on Liverpool’s transfer plans, with Federico Chiesa the only player the club have signed since the Dutchman took over from Jurgen Klopp
Arne Slot has revealed that Liverpool are “definitely working on strengthening in the summer”, having only made one signing since the Dutchman replaced Jurgen Klopp.
Liverpool have enjoyed an excellent season under Slot so far, with the Reds currently six points clear at the top of the Premier League. They have also qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with a game to spare.
However, Liverpool made just one signing last summer, completing a cut-price deal for forward Federico Chiesa who has barely featured. They also agreed a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, but that deal will not officially be completed until next summer.
The Reds are also not expected to make any signings in the final week of the January transfer window, with Slot happy with the make up of his squad. However, they are already planning for next summer, with the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all up in the air.
“Liverpool should always be competing for a league title, we should always be competing for the Champions League,” Slot told Gary Lineker in an interview for BBC Football Focus. “I’m hoping I will be able to keep the club at that level.
“I know people sometimes question this because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well. There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad.
“But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer. So that would mean, in my opinion, that if the players keep working this hard then we will be able to challenge for every trophy we are playing for.”
Slot also admitted he has been surprised by how well his first season in charge has gone so far, with Liverpool suffering just two defeats across all competitions. “You don’t think after 20 games we will have that many points and I wasn’t expecting us to be top with the margin we have,” he added.
“It’s always nice to be up there, but nobody would have expected this. I’m the last person who would have expected [reigning champions Manchester] City to have such a bad run.”
