Mohamed Salah has been in fine form for Liverpool this season but a fresh approach from the Saudi Pro League is anticipated next summer after a 2023 bid was rejected

Former Premier League star Gabby Agbonlahor claims he has been told Mohamed Salah will move to the Saudi Pro League at the end of this season.

Salah, who remains Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, was the subject of interest from Al-Ittihad in 2023. A big-money bid was knocked back, though, and Salah stayed for Jurgen Klopp’s final season as well as the first under new boss Arne Slot.

Since arriving from Feyenoord, Slot has been able to get plenty of change out of the Egypt international. Salah scored three times in the first three games of the season, and also netted in the 5-1 Carabao Cup victory over West Ham United on Wednesday.

The forward’s contract is up in the summer, though, and he has yet to agree an extension. This means overseas clubs have the chance to open talks over a free transfer from January, and Agbonlahor claims a move is essentially done.

“I know Salah’s going,” the former Aston Villa man said on talkSPORT. “I’ve got a source that told me Salah’s definitely going. Saudi, on a record contract.

“I’m hearing that he will earn more than [Cristiano] Ronaldo, he’ll be the face of the football over there. You can’t turn that down if you’re Mo Salah. He’s done everything at Liverpool hasn’t he?”

“I think he would have signed a new contract by now [if he was staying], and it’s an offer he can’t turn down,” Agbonlahor added. He was then asked about Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are also out of contract in June, but admitted he didn’t have information on the pair.

Until the future of Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold is resolved, Liverpool manager Slot is likely to find himself fielding questions on all three. That was the case before the Reds’ Premier League match against Nottingham Forest in mid-September, but the Dutchman was quick to allay any fears the situation was distracting his team

“Again, I’ll give the boring answer, which you’re going to get from me as long as there’s no news about this, but we don’t talk about contract situations over here,” he told reporters. “Is it distracting? Is that the word you used for me? No, it isn’t because I’m fully focused on the individuals in the team and they’re part of the team.

“I’m just focused on trying to work with them in the best possible way to get the best out of them. So it’s not a distraction for me at all.”

Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk were left on the bench as a heavily-rotated Liverpool team beat West Ham on Wednesday to move into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, while Salah got half an hour as a substitute. All three are in contention to start on Saturday evening away to Wolves.
