The Terminator actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has shared a video of his daily health drink, which he makes himself and includes a very unusual ingredient – and some fans were left baffled
Arnold Schwarzenegger disclosed the details of a unique health concoction he whips up every day to stay on top of his protein needs. Chatting with Men’s Health about his dietary habits post-2020 heart operation, the “Terminator” star and former Mr Universe has everyone taken aback by his homemade protein shake.
At 77 years young, the Hollywood legend and ex-governor still maintains an impressive fitness routine, hitting the gym at least once daily and stocking up on fruits and veg. However, it’s the bespoke protein drink that really got people talking.
The mix includes predictable items like almond milk, cherry juice, and a banana, but it’s Schwarzenegger’s addition of an entire egg – shell included – to the blender that truly turned heads.
“This is how I make my protein drink – there’s nothing special about it. I just put almond milk – just a little bit – and tart cherry juice for muscle soreness. Then you go in with a banana, and a whole egg. And I like to go in with the whole egg,” Arnold explains.
He even jokes, “Now, this drink you could literally sell at any health bar, or any other bar for that matter. I sometimes put in Schnapps or tequila,” reports the Mirror US.
As odd as it may seem, Schwarzenegger might be onto something. Eggshell contains beneficial nutrients like calcium carbonate, proteins, and minerals that can bolster one’s immunity. Indeed, consuming half of an eggshell could give you the full daily recommended amount of calcium.
It turns out that the membrane of an eggshell might be good for your joint health as it’s packed with protein, specifically in the form of collagen, which could help maintain and support your joints.
However, not everyone’s buying it, with one sceptic posting: “A whole egg shell – only the Terminator would do this!” Another quipped: “I think that egg shell must have some side effects on your health.”
Someone else chimed in jokingly: “That egg is going to hurt on the way out,” and another voiced a more serious concern: “Olla! Idol. My concern would be the egg shell cuz he might get his stomach wounded.”
The clip also gave fans a peek inside his fridge, revealing a mix of bodybuilding staples and healthy options like eggs and beef alongside fruits like grapes, strawberries and his top pick, watermelon.
Arnie explained: “I’m health conscious now. I wasn’t always health conscious because when you are young, you get away with a lot of things. Now I eat more oatmeal, greens, vegetables, and healthy foods.”
He elaborated on his diet by saying, “I stay away more from meats, animal products, animal proteins – because there is this misconception that that is the only way to get big and strong. Now I’ve backed off that, and I feel much better being more on greens.”
Big Arnie admitted he’s into supplements too, but clarifies he pops them to complement a good diet, not as a magic fix for all his nutritional needs. He also sticks to a daily routine of hitting the gym each morning, followed by a 45-minute bike ride.
He has toned down lifting exceptionally heavy weights on doctor’s orders after his aortic valve re-replacement in 2020, and sometimes squeezes in evening workouts along with enjoying the occasional cheat day.
“Cheat days come up quite frequently. The key thing is to remember that for every calorie you eat, you will have to burn it off – nobody is going to do it for you,” he explained.
“Of course I cook too. My favourite thing to cook is a fillet steak. My bodybuilding friends come over but they won’t eat the delicious food because they all want to look like me – but it’s never going to happen!”.
