Viktor Gyokeres has scored 69 times in 74 outings since joining Sporting Lisbon and is now being linked with big moves to Manchester United and Arsenal, but Troy Deeney has warned both clubs from signing him
Arsenal and Manchester United should avoid signing Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres because he’s “not a natural finisher”, according to Troy Deeney.
The Swedish hitman has emerged as one of the most sought-after strikers in world football after his glut of goals in the last two seasons.
He’s scored 69 times in 74 appearances since joining Lisbon from Coventry City in 2023 and is now being linked with big moves to United, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona. But despite his incredible figures in front of goal, former Watford striker Troy Deeney has warned off the two English clubs from signing Gyokeres in the near future.
The pundit believes Gyokeres still doesn’t possess a striker’s lethal instinct and doesn’t think he would have enough star quality to help either team win the Premier League title.
“You know when you say something the clip is going to come back in six months,’ he told talkSPORT. “I genuinely think he’s a good footballer, he works really hard, all of that. But I don’t think he’s a natural finisher.
“And again, everyone is going to pull up his goal record, I get that. But I don’t think he takes either of those two to winning the Premier League. That’s just my opinion, and if he did, they’d have already bought him.”
Both United boss Ruben Amorim and Gunners head coach Mikel Arteta are crying out for a regular goalscorer like Gyokeres. United forward Rasmus Hojlund, who cost £72m, is struggling for consistency at Old Trafford while winger Bukayo Saka is carrying the goalscoring burden for Arsenal.
Gyokeres has already responded to speculation he could follow Amorim at United after the Portuguese coach got the best out of him during their two years together.
“Going with Amorim to Man United? I don’t know, I’m here. I really like being here, it’s not something I think about. I’m enjoying it here. I’m sad about him leaving. We wish him all the best”.
